I've just got my first full suss frame.
The official spec suggests a 222mm shock with 70mm travel.
I've measured the eye to eye on the shock in place and it measure 230mm, but the spring is only a 56mm one (2.2 ").
The shock looks fine on the bike, but according to what I can find on the interweb, a 2.2" travel shock equates to an eye to eye length of 7.875" or 200mm
Is there normally 20-30mm of adjustment in the eye to measurement? If not, am I going to die horribly using it?

What he said though obviously not all strokes are available in all lengths - what make/model shock is it?

The one on it at the moment is a X-Fusion Glyde R 200/56 mm 7.875/2.2 inch
What's confusing me, is that it looks right in the frame and the eye to eye measurement is around 230mm 
I'm guessing the stroke length is 70mm for a 222mm i2i (the official dimensions), so if your i2i is 230 and there's only a 2.2" spring on there, thats normally used for a 50mm stroke shock and is way too short for the shock. in fact, does the preload ring even touch the spring at all if its only a 2.2"?
Something is wrong with those numbers, that spring would be rattling around and not even touching the end plate and preload plate.

i can't see how you can have x fusion shock that is 200x56 measuring 230 i to i? surely it would measure 200?

Well that is the question! The spring that came off it is labelled 450 x 56. A quick look at X-Fusion's website has suggested that the spring should be paired with a 200mm eye to eye shock (http://www.x-fusion-shox.com/shocks/glyde)
I've taken it off and measured it, and the eye to eye is 230mm and the spring is indicating a stroke of 56mm. The only thing I can think of is that Iron Horse (Its a Iron Horse Yakuza, single pivot design) got custom shocks made up by X-Fusion.
You have the wrong spring on it, but the shock itself is correct. Get a spring with the correct length on it and all will be well! If you run a shock with a stroke longer than the spring the spring will bind and make bad noises.

450 x 3" I would say. Springs typically have a few mill of free stroke more than the shock itself to prevent binding.
