we've got an office in the converted attic of an old building. Over winter a couple of times, a wasp has just appeared from somewhere and drunkenly buzzed about until we've caught it and put it out.
Where will they be coming from?

Given the time of year it is likely to be a queen wasp that has been woken from hibernation in your building. Come spring she'll make a nest and start a new colony for the season. I am pretty live and let live where wasps are concerned but they were a pain in the wotsit this summer as we had a huge nest in our loft.

in the rafters. there'll be a nest nearby and they're waking up and then coming into the warm, hence them being drowsy. you could be in for a fun summer…..during the summer look at where they're entering the building and then either live and let live or block it up next winter again having found the nest and dealt with it.
contact the council environmental health should deal with it, it's what me dad did for many years.

They'll be somewhere in the roofspace – the roof has to have some ventilation so they'd get in there.
We had several nests in the loft of out last place over the years, mostly all quite small – apart from one (we had rubbish louvre windows immediately below and they'd fly into the bathroom by accident) we never noticed them. It's really at the end of the summer when the colony collapses that they get cranky and disorientated. They predate on assorted garden pests, so quite beneficial FWIW.

Don't waste the opportunity to cool the wasp in the freezer, not for too long as you'll kill it. Make a small leash out of some fine cotton thread attach to wasps head… voila wasp on a string.

great – we've lost it now.

where is it going to spring from next?

Tie the string a bit tighter next time. Not too tight or you'll decapitate it.

I put it round it's back leg and tied it to my table though. Little bugger.

Southern Yeti, Dont try it with the wasps in Cillycwm.
    They have powerful friends.

We tried that in a beer garden once – used an upside down pint glass on a bench, with smoke blown from underneath to pacify the wasp. The leash was made from hair.

Unfortunately the first never recovered from the smoking and the second died after becoming trapped under the edge of the glass during the ham-fisted capture attempt 🙁

    Amateur!

Don't let Guido know though, he's more than happy to mow down deer in his van cackling his head off, but try to drown a load of wasps in a pint glass and he gets his red shorts on….

Some people stand in the darkness
Afraid to step into the light
Some people need to help somebody
When the edge of surrender's in sight….

Stay clear from the feckers-proof that god exists and he hates us and invented wasps 😈
