Which kindle?

It works as emergency 3G when you're in dodgy places.
We were on a train travelling through Switzerland and I'd gathered that while pretty much everything about Swiss trains is excellent, one failing is that it's pretty much impossible to understand what the lady is saying over the tannoy and because I only had our destination name and nothing else I didn't know when to get ready to get off.So I turned on 3G on my kindle, found a swiss train map and worked out what the station before ours was, thus providing me with the information I needed.
So in that very specific circumstance it was great!

I got the Wife one from Tesco the other day, for Xmas. Its stashed in the man cave.
Any tips on the best place/method to get the "books" to go on it ?

Anything from Amazon .azw files
Any .mobi filesAny .epub or .lit files will need converting with something like Calibre
As with most digital media, there's loads of places legal or otherwise

So the 3g is free globally? Cos my phone 3g is free in this country, but very expensive abroad. Which network does it use? And how is that paid for?

CharlieMungus - It's worldwide and paid for by Amazon. Mine has worked all over Europe, Oz and the US.

Can't you just buy them a Beano or something? Kids of today, etc.

It is, but it's dependent on cooperating providers being available I believe. There's a list on Amazon's website (in the Kindle FAQ I think).

Worldwide 3G is pretty cool. The 3G is only on the keyboard one isn't it?

The thing can hold like a thousand books, if you run out of reading material on holiday then that's not really a technology issue.
I don't always know what books I want to read in advance. I like the ability to buy books on a whim, wherever I am. When driving to Germany we kept seeing a specific sign that we didn't understand. Get out the kindle, bought dictionary, bosh, problem solved. Sort of.. translation dictionaries are one thing it doesn't seem to do well actually. Unless someone's got it figured out.
Plus the emergency internet/mail/maps access is brilliant.

i really fancy the Kindle touch, but it's only available in the states at the moment too
think there's a "snook" or other brand touch one available in the UK.
Posted 6 months ago # -
I wouldn't bother with touch, personally. More expense, and you only use two buttons mostly anyway. The other advantage of touch is smaller size and no keyboard on the bottom, but the cheap UK Kindle has the same form factor anyway.
There's a touch-screen Sony one if you really love wiping fingerprints off screens.

Dunno about the touch ones, but the really nice thing about the standard one is that the matt screen doesn't pick up fingerprints. Far nicer than something like the iPad.

i really fancy the Kindle touch
The Kindle functionality cannot be improved upon
Buy it now before it gets ruined
Think about it - how many people have said "well I tried it but thought the acme one was better"

i agree. i love my wifi only keyboard kindle, nothing i'd improve on it. get a refurb one now while you can from amazon, only £80.

but not sure if it's worth waiting for the Fire to be released in the UK.
The battery life on the Kindle is 2 months.
The battery life on the fire is 8 hours
Posted 6 months ago # -
That's why I won't buy a Fire. It's no longer an ereader, it is a tablet.
Posted 6 months ago # -
a fairly decent one that can easily be jailbroken and modified to be an awesome android tablet, apparently.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Cost is less of an issue, it will be bought withproject money, so 50 quid here or there won't matter, what i'm looking for is something that will do the job best.

The 3g is free, but it doesn't give you web access globally. Some countries it does, some it doesn't. If you look for 'mobi' or 'kindle' on the piratebay you can get massive libraries. Lonely planet pdfs work quite well too

Your choice is 3G or no, I think. Although, on the small cheap one the case is a lot less sturdy. Of course neither protect the thing fully of course but there's no clasp on the small one, the cover is a lot thinner and doesn't overlap the device.

I was thinking i may as welll get 3G, just for some web access in awkward situations?
Posted 6 months ago # -
Get a 3G refurb - I did after my first one got destroyed (they are definitely not as drop resistant as a mobile phone). I only ever use 3G, not wi-fi. As for the loading up before you go thing, with 3G it's one less thing to bother about, and as someone mentioned previously you can buy books recommended at the back of the one you've just finished without shifting from your sun-lounger. Even better, you can read a sample before you buy.
Web access is a bit clunky, but it is possible.OT slightly, but I'd consider a £120 android tablet before I'd buy the Amazon Fire, just seems too limited to me.

i don't need a refurb. It is bought through work, so needs to be new.
Posted 6 months ago # -
If you can spare the £50 it's a no brainer in my eBook.
Posted 6 months ago # -
I can, so the 3G is selected. Next, Keyboard or not
Posted 6 months ago # -
Keyboard. Get it done.
Posted 6 months ago # -
3g, keyboard, now do i have to decide on size?
Posted 6 months ago # -
Wait.. are you in the US or what? There are only two on the UK site...
Posted 6 months ago # -
no, not in US
Posted 6 months ago # -
Yes.
