I’m fed up… It’s been snowing on and of now since the beginning of November and it’s been snowing all day today, too. My local tails have been under several feet of snow since mid November and after today I can’t see them being rideable for at least another month or more (my local tails are the alps). And after working the last two weeks outside putting on a roof in less than ideal weather has got me thinking about upping and leaving (again) for pastures new.

    So, where to?

Major factor being climate. I don’t mind weather, but months of cold, grey, snow-laden skies isn’t what I’m after. Also needs to have something in the way of hills for riding.
Don’t want to move to some third world country or anywhere where they speak Spanish.

Canada. Lots of room, lots of sun (even when it’s very cold), and infinitely civilised.

There are plenty of places in Spain where Spanish is not the first language.

Canada is great but the weather isn’t really much better than the uk (in BC anyway).

    Learn to ski?

How about learning to ski? If you’re in the Alps then it would seem the logical idea (at least to me). I’m in Canada and I’ve not ridden a bike off-road since October (and that was in Moab) but I’ve spent 40+ days on skis and a change is as good as a rest….

You will know that, by Canadian standards, BC is a ‘microclimate’.

I had a French teacher in school who had moved to Winnipeg from Paris. Winnipeg! The Birmingham of Canada!

But as he said, ‘I was sick of never seeing the sun’. And truth be told, it almost never stops shining in Winnipeg.

    But I would suggest Montreal.

Another vote for Canada. You’ll miss tea, good sausages and cheap cheese, as well as a sense of fashion; but seeing the sun is great (even when it’s -20), skiing regularly is easy, and the people are very nice.

have you considered a SAD light?

Considerably cheaper than emigrating and will probably solve your issues.

    What is SAD?

Just in case you didn’t know, you are only allowed to ride your mountain bike on fireroads (schotterweg) in the black forest.

Happarently the Canadians need folk moving over there to fill the tax gap anticipated by their ageing population.

I had the chance to emigrate to NZ in the seventies but Mrs S #1 bottled it so we didn’t go. I have regretted it ever since as I let life overtake me.

Whatever you do don’t come back to the hole that is the uk. Nearly April and its -4 outside and not looking like getting any warmer over the next few weeks.

    Had enough. 🙁
