heard ammonia can disolve alumiunium oxide and hence release my seatpost, question is where can you buy it in high concentrations?

Get really de-hydrated and wee on it. Not sure how easy it is to buy pure ammonia with it being an ingredient for lots of explosives.
You can buy solutions (as cleaning products) from hardware stores.Posted 2 years ago # -
as a fetiliser from a farm shop? I know NO3 is used as a fertiliser. actually... we made ammonia in school just the other day!

You can buy it online normally in 500ml bottle from various places. I bought some for the same reason but it didnt work or maybe I didnt leave long enough. Just make sure you have all the windows open and cover your eyes and nose when using it. Just search for household ammonia.

are you building a bomb ?? (secretly)

No need to laugh ,Cullen.
As we've all taken part in this thread, we'll probably ALL be named as co-conspirators at the trial.
Anybody got Aamer Anwars phone number?

Quite popular for use among gangs etc or was..
ie Bernard o mahoney used it alot..Posted 2 years ago # -
Some poor GCHQ chappie or chappess will now be obliged to wade through hours of STW shite to confirm that we are not in fact international terrorists hell-bent on the destruction of the Western world, but are in fact silly middle-aged blokes who ride bicycles in mud..
Posted 2 years ago # -
But if they read the actual mag and see the amount of bushy beards that are featuring, we might be in trouble.
Time to shave!

Middle aged blokes
Speak for yourself......
Anyone know where I can get any detonators ??
Don't know what I'll do with them, but it'll keep the secret service busy anyways...... Maybe I'll get a late night/early morning knock on the door
Posted 2 years ago # -
Would you like some Chapati flour to go with that sir?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Ammonia? Detonators? Beards?
GCHQ have just changed their light bulb from yellow to red.

When I left school had a job as I dyeline printer, for an oil exploration firm full of sandal wearing long bearded geologists (probably rode SS) used a rotary printing machine that used Ammonia to develop the image onto paper or sepia, place used to really pen & ink. Doubt they still use that methoid now. Could try a printers.

"As judge, I direct the jury to disregard the defendant(s) claim to be naively researching seatpost removal, and find them instead, GUILTY of attempting to cause explosions, and conspiring with the full intention of committing acts of terrorism"
I'm tellin' you I can see it now...Posted 2 years ago # -
Ammonia is horrible horrible stuff to use and anything that you can buy for household use won't be anywhere near strong enough for what you need.
What's the frame? Steel or alu?
A mate got his seized seatpost out with very strong caustic soda solution but it took about 10 days of him changing the solution every day. That was in a steel frame; he stripped it down completely and poured the caustic in from the BB shell down the seat tube.Posted 2 years ago # -
has anyone said mohammad jihad yet?

Just nipping down to the woods to film myself crawling in the undergrowth with a tea towel on me head and a
toy gunseatpost achem!Posted 2 years ago # -
Yup, publically available ammonia is nowhere near concentrated enough, I've tried the very same trick.
I've also had the same funny looks when asking in B&Q for drain cleaner that specifically contains H2SO4, NOT the usual cheapy one that contains alkalis lol (Home anodising!)

Hmm! I bought a kheffiyeh (sp) scarf in Jordan last year, and we have some Arab head dress type things from Egypt.
Very incriminating if I get a knock at the door.

i dont no if this will work for you but coca cola work for me turned bike upside down and soaked seat post for about 6 hours.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Heh heh, Idlejon, at least the rest of us are gonna get a loaded trial.
you're not even going to get that, Its straight to Guantanamo for you!

You dont want to use coke, its A) sticky and B) acid, it creates more metal oxides. If it would come out with coke it would come out with wd40 (by which I mean it's purely the soaking thats helping moisten things, which WD would do just fine).

aluminium oxide is amphoteric so it will react with both acids and bases. You best bet will be to try a dilute hydrogen chloride solution.
but before you try mucking about with chemicals have you tried the brute force technique of removing most of the bits off the frame. Put seat in bench vise and rotating the frame around the seatpost using all the lovely leverage you get by hauling (carefully)on the headtube. (the trick is gradually apply the pressure, not maul it and it should release easily as it rotates.)It's not as brutal as you first think and has never failed yet.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Homebase sells it. Use it to cycle fish tanks instead of using "suicide" fish!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Do you want to be able to use the seatpost again?
If not, crush it in a bench vice near the bottom. Rotate 90degrees and do it again.Posted 2 years ago # -

That's quite odd though, as Al2O3 (anodised surfaces, which as far as I'm aware are the same as normal oxidation products) strip quite nicely in fairly weak alkalis but are perfectly happy in very concentrated h2sO4?
Posted 2 years ago # -
wo...wo.... enough of the bomb jokes people i dont fancy being dragged off by men in suits!
yes i have tried many other brute force methods as you describe...
does crushing the seatpost work? there is only about 6cm of its length exposed?
its aluminum frame and alu post.
The post is already ahem broken....the seat clamp is no longer with us.so whats the best ideas:
amonia
hydrogen chloride
crushing
(also tried the drill through + rod +spinning)beer to whom ever picks the winner! this is annoying beyond belief!

Clamp the seat post in a vice & twist the bike..whats the worst that can happen?
Posted 2 years ago # -
I tried the grab and twist solution, it didn't solve it on mine, it just started bending the frame. I cut the top off the post, sawed down the length of the inside of the post with a hacksaw blade (took sodding forever as you can put very little force on it, but I have a pierced seat tube so I could re-attach the saw handle, radially out from the centre, making sure not to go into the frame, then crushed it with mole grips. It fractured into about 5 pieces but I managed to "roll" one edge inside the rest of the post, at which point the bonded joint failed spectacularly and all was good.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I've done what coffeeking suggests (as a last resort) on a BMX frame.
I used a large hacksaw blade that I 'backed' with a thin piece of wood. Took bloody ages to do though, and I'd use extreme care considering the frame is alu too.
(sorry about the unhelpful OT jokes BTW)
Posted 2 years ago # -
yep done the vice thing, no grip first off so drilled hole put bar through to give the vice something to grip....bent the bar, had a couple ppl swinging on it.
coffeeking isnt there a large risk that i will just crunch off the top and leave the rest in the frame?
Posted 2 years ago # -
There's a small risk, yes. But you're fecked anyway at this rate, at least with the top cut off you could get it reamed. I meant make a cut down the length of the inside of the post, in case that wasn't clear. Once the cut is made you can slowly work round and force the post in on itself.
