What’s this, then? For scale, it’s sitting in a pint glass. Body is about the size of my little fingernail, and its legs were a good 4″ long (it was reaching up to get out and was past the bulge in the glass).

How can you tell just from the glass? He could be in his local.

Top one is argiope bruennichi I think. It’s the only spider whose scientific name I know!

I saw one in the south of England 20 years ago but haven’t seen one since. I think they are rather beautiful.

What you’ve got there is a specimen of Shortarsus Longlegii
