Old faithful from Morrison's died last night, whilst tackling a particularly tough piece of misshapen frozen wholemeal. 
We had a wonderful 15 years together - can't believe it's over, gone in a flash, just like that.
So, what do I replace it with?
Do I go the simple & cheap route?
Will I notice any perceptible difference from a Dualit, the 'Apple' of the toaster world?
Does anyone make toasted sandwiches in a toaster?
Do I need my muffins warming?
Whatever you choose don't buy the KTM one.
It seems that it's as slow as the bike are fast...

My Dualit is 10 years old and still working fine.
The elements are easily replaceable and there's no fancy electronics to go wrong. (The timer is clockwork)
Best of all they're British.

i got a cheap(ish) and cheerful sainsburys own-brand dualit-a-like a good few years ago (4 slot, defrost, reheat and toast settings etc etc) and it's been fine. 20 quid or so.
CG- i think that with the advent of that "concept" toaster above, we can assume that toasters fall under the 'gadgets' category and therefore can be discussed without shame by 'blokes'.

Dualits are the best I have ever seen and both virtually indestructible and repairable if you do manage to break them. But at a price and a half.
In nursing we make a lot of toast - I mean a lot. Ordinary ones just don't last - but dualits do. could be 3 or 4 loaves toasted every day per toaster 365 days a year

Does it enhance your life in some way?
(Say, in the same way that riding a custom painted/titanium frame enhances your cycling? )
Can you justify the purchase of such a comparatively expensive object when much cheaper options are widely available and will do the job perfectly adequately?
Or can you spend the extra money happy in the knowledge that you are an individual of immense taste and distinction, just like the millions of other individuals out there all with the same immaculate taste and the same purchase?
I do have a Roberts FM Radio that I picked up comparatively cheaply in a sale. It's a nice thing to own, is beautifully designed sounds fantastic. A cheaper Sony would fulfil the same function at a fraction of the price - same with my bike, do I need an 853 frame, XT bits, or do I just like owning something considered to be of fine manufacture?

Ms Spanner loves Alessi stuff. Funny, none of it actually gets USED for anything.
Form before function wins every time with Alessi stuff cos the form is just so good!! A classic design by Philip Stark and it looks fantastic on the windowsill....who uses a juicer anyway unless it's one of these new fangled, no effort electric ones.

We have a Dualit one (bought by my mother as a pressy I hasten to add!!!!), and its err, very average. Doesn't do toast any better than a £10 Boots one IMO.

I believe Dualit's are made in the UK, rather than just designed/assembled, if supporting a UK company is of any interest..
My Dualit is broken. I am resisitng the urge to spend £10 replacing it at Argos rather than trying to work out how to get the Dualit fixed.
It does not toast bread conspicuously well, but my dinner party guests adore it, and at least two young women have slept with me purely because I owned it.

This may, of course, not be entirely true.
In fact, it may indeed be an outrageous lie!
Dualits do seem to last for ages. If you are a serial toast eater, then over time, it may be a worthwhile investment. However, many people do buy them simply for their ponce factor. Like those Stark juicers, Gaggia coffee machines they use twice a year, or SMEG fridges.
You've got all of those, jolly well have not you, BD?
