Also bear in mind that different brands of tyres will have different interpretations of dual ply and single ply tyres. For example, Maxxis Dual Ply tyres are more equivalent to Intense Four Ply tyres, whereas the Intense Four Ply tyres are a little heavier in the carcass than Maxxis single ply but nothing like as robust as Maxxis Dual Ply.
You can get a better idea of how robust a tyre carcass will be by the TPI (threads per inch) measure.
The aim of a dual ply tyre versus a single ply is to provide greater support to the side wall, making the tyre more stable in corners and over rocks and helping to prevent the tyre from deforming so badly over rocks as to cause pinch flats.
