so….we're thinking of getting a dog – but what dog is best to take on a ride?

not dopey enough to run right in front of your wheels
    quick enough to keep up
fit enough to stay out all day

not too big – Lab size max
not too small – no terriers etc.
and one that will be OK in a flat.

    spaniel any good?

not a whippet, they get tired and stop in front of you when you least expect it………

Spaniels will need a lot of exercise/mental stimulation EVERYDAY, not just at the weekend when you can go riding.

(I'm assuming you don't go for a long ride everyday)

I think the live in a flat but run all day window is a bit narrow, or maybe non existant. Its not that its impossible but it reall would mean being out with the dog 2 hours a day or English Springer Spaniel is a part time job really

A field Cocker might work. I've met owners who do one walk a day

Our staffie cross was fantastic with the bike after a bit of training. The only reason he doesn't run with us now is that his knees are a bit messed up (nothing to do with the running, it's a birth defect).

sheepdogs/collies are not indoor dogs, behavioural ? probs wiil follow if you coop them up in a flat

    +1 for the border terrier.
Not too big (smaller than a lab)
Not too small (big for a terrier)
Got a good turn of speed
    Will run all day.
Ours has never chewed anything at home.
small easy to collect poo nuggets (for the anti dog miseries!)

well there would be ski touring going on. I ride pretty much every day in the summer (perk of the job) – work at home, can spare an hour or two each day not doing some active sport to walk the dog as well.

    hmmm. interesting thoughts people.

    Ridgeback.

Nope. Ridgebacks are proper rubbish in the snow.

Great for running all day – they were bred to run all day with horses in southern Africa, so fine to run with bikes. Mine used to run around Hamsterley, but nearly choked on me climbing up Lochnagar a few cold winters ago. Plus, sticking a big dog blanket on a 60kg dog is NOT cool 😉

On the plus side, they will clear the trail of terriers and SSers.

Chunky – thats a beautiful dog though. I miss mine dearly.

Airedale; smart, although stubborn if not enough stimulation, doesn't chew/dig if you get them out doing stuff regularly. Biggest of terriers so long enough of leg for the snow, bred as a working dog so goes all day no worries.

good enough for Churchill, Roosevelt and John Wayne – nuff said. 😉

    German Wirehaired Pointer.

Had a Spring in the flat, but I work at home so it was easy to give him the engagement they need everyday.
