Seems like a silly mistake to me. I wouldn't be surprised if Murdoch gets his way now.

The coalition was an act of desperation by the two parties and always doomed to failure, frankly I'm surprised it's lasted this long.

I hope he doesn't go.
Didn't vote for his mob, but anyone in government who is opposed to the Murdoch octopus deserves support.
If Labour had any brains, instead of using it to criticise the govt, they should be jumping in and supporting him. There may be enough Liberals ready to jump ship into a new coalition.

I think the 'Student Pledge' was a display of what I've always found unrealistic about the Libs - call me old fashioned but you can't run a government sitting on the fence, and frankly they'd say anything to get a vote, however far fetched.
Although some say that if it was a purely Tory government things would be a lot more draconian... or is that over optimistic as they've just been told to tow the line anyway - Vince's statements suggest that they don't have a great deal of influence in the house of cards

Call me Dave is way too shrewd a politician to get rid of Vince.
The tories are laughing the socks off at the moment. They've implimented some horrendous policies, yet are walking away scot free as all the blame is being heaped at the door of the lib dems. They need Vince and Clegg as fig-leaves. And now Cables stature is massively diminished, Dave can keep him on a much tighter leash.
And George Osborne must be utterly disbelieving of the easy ride he's getting from both the press and the Labour party at the moment. He's the architect of the cuts, yet he's virtually invisible.

I personally doint think he has done anything that requires resigning.
We want honest politicians and then when we "catch" one doing this we clamour for their head. Is it any wonder they speak to us how they do then.

Really anyone surprsied that Vince has a line in the sand they cannnot push him over without him resigning. Not exactly news.

Unfrtunately the honest answer wasn't given in a open forum so it leads to accusations of saying one thing publicly whilst thinking something else differently. I can't believe that in this day and age politicians still fall for this. I'd have a lot more respect for him if he had come out and said he was against it all and as such he wasn't the best person to make the decision.

Politics, innit.
Much of the wikileaks stuff isn't dissimilar, a bunch of diplomats etc say what they really thing about various politicians, head of state etc, that really shouldn't be suprising to anyone (except that's not the face they normally have to show of course).
And as for all the grumbling about the LDs saying one thing then falling into bed with the Tories - it's just a matter of being pragmatic, at least it's a functional government, and one that in a few areas may have been tamed a little compared to what some of the more rabid right of the Tory party might like to see. To expect anything different is a bit naive IMO.The pity about Cable fluffing it is that there was a good chance of him giving Murdock a bit of a fight, even if whoever handles it is supposed to be impartial (if you believe there can be sure a thing in politics)

+1 Vince has been neutered and the last thing they want is him free to express more of his opinions on the backbenches. Apparently George described Clegg and Co as being "very brave" over their tuition fee vote. Brave

Vince has always been quite happy to cultivate an image of the "wise economic sage" but if you look at statements made before the election a lot of them were at best fanciful and in many cases completely wrong.
Although he's undoubtedly got more "real life" experience than many other MPs he seems a bit too interested in his own image / popularity - so it's hardly a surprise that he was caught out talking a load of nonsense about his power and influence.
