I dug out my old video camera which uses miniDV cassettes. It's an alright machine and works quite well.

However, the software is now pretty old and I don't even know if it will run on Vista (I haven't tried yet) but I do remember it being a bit clunky.

Does Windows have a basic video editing programme? Are there any available on the net worth looking at? I want to download the video to the PC and then cut out the bits I want, maybe add a soundtrack and then burn to dvd. Or upload to Youtube or similar....

What's good for a beginer?

hi mate , i know windows 7 do , i think vista does as well . plug it in what can go wronge

windows movie maker will do this job just fine. you'll need a firewire to connect the device to the computer if you don't already have one.

i only run windows 7 on both my machines,as soon as i plug something in it loads the drivers and off we go , using windows stuff belive it or not, i never used vista,ever, had xp right up untill i got beta version of 7 ,

WMM is a surprisingly good bit of software, wee bit counterintuitive sometimes (you can see how many people struggle with the titles, watching youtube and checking out all the blue backgrounds) but still, it does well.

Thanks guys. Should I import to AVI or WMV file type? What is best and why?

yeah when i export from wmm i seem to loose quality!

I export them to ridiculously gigantic wmv. It does seem to make a big difference to the video quality, though there might be better ways to do it.
