Going with the 'it's a small world' theory there must be more out there like me that really enjoy Turbo training. To the extent you'll train on them even if it's fine out just to enjoy the intensity.
I've just started a two month training plan that coincides with the cross season so I have a bit of fitness for the early road season.
Anyway pushing yourself to almost passing out, when you can't even suck in the hot air coming from your body, when youre actually shouting out to stop and all it takes is to stop and step off and be in your living room in a second is a strangely good feeling, agree?

Yep I like turbo training, for that vein popping I want to die experience try the Tabata Protocol, 14 minutes of pure hell that will have you crying for your mummy by the end.

i sort of get what your saying, but if its nice weather I do prefer to actually go out and ride.

turbo train 3 days a week regardless of weather usually before work so I can fit a ride in the evenings and weekends outside for more social event without feeling like I haven't pushed hard enough.

Like Chris Boardman said enjoyment is the wrong word its more like satisfaction.

I'd rather be outside so up till now I've only used a turbo in the winter when it was too manky or dark to go out. However this winter I've been using 2x20min intervals at increasing power output to improve my threshold power- seems to be paying off in the real world out on the road so I may continue with it even when spring returns.

Its quite difficult to find a long uninterrupted section of road to do long consistent intervals on which is where the turbo comes in. Also if you want to max out to the point of exhaustion its safer to do it on a turbo.

Indeed, try as I might I just can't do the concentrated efforts when on the road. I'm trying to get quicker from the off, as my vets races are very short or limited to an hour and I can only find speed halfway through, by then it can be too late. So I've embarked on a Chris Carmichael system that concentrates on very short repeated high intensity bursts, in the hope I can find that early speed or power to bridge gaps.

absolutely love it. Something particularly wrong and yet so satisfying about it. Regularly set up on the patio in decent weather too 🙂

Did my first "test" of this winters training on Monday night. 30 mins eye balls out to calculate my FTP.

Felt very ill after (but satisfied with my result and knowing that I can push myself to that level) and could hardly stand up. The last 5 mins seemed like about 3 hours

My watts are up and weight is down. 😀

Whilst we're on the subject of trainers…

Anyone recommend a decent program to do on one? I picked up one 2nd hand to try and regain my fitness after a badly broken collar bone skiing in August. With summer rapidly approaching (here in NZ) I don't want to spend the first few weeks struggling to climb even the smallest hill.

The site is pretty good as it lets you load up plans and then run them with an alarm between the steps.

and more specifically my hyrbid, "inverted pyramids with some sprints thrown in at the end" plan

I've got the POWER dvd from Wiggle it's made by cycle ops I think.
It's brilliant. love it to do hard interval. it's got 8 different sessions. move a session up every 1 or 2 week and you can even tailor your own sessions. it's made by an american guy and his accent and the music is bizarrely not annoying and very addictive.
It takes you on the track and on the road to chase other riders.

It makes turbo training super enjoyable, very hard and satisfying adn bloody efficient for improving your strength and I find your ability to have bursts of power when needed in a ride.

Had a quick look at that website, looks pretty good. Not sure I could quite mange the plan you recommended yet but it looks good/hard.

Great training tool, but I'd rather ride a bike and do hill intervals, fartlek rides or whatever. I guess it depends on what you're trying to achieve.

I got a virtual reality thing for mine, great fun – like early computer games. The crowds even clap as you ride past!

Just bought myself an early xmas present with the Tacx Fortius setup. Can't say how good it is, flippin fantastic (with cost ignored as it ain't cheap!). Takes a while to setup and get running etc but once done the results are really good. And then there's the RLV riding, so impressive, got a tour up the Alps planned for the weekend then after you can spend ages going over your performance data etc 8)

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing like being outside for real but when you have an injury like me now or the weathers rubbish etc you can't get a much better training tool and with the RLV it almost makes it enjoyable, well almost 😆

Hell, reading those first few posts is enough to make me feel nauseous- I think I'll stick with my nice Tacx RLV's. Avoiding Ventoux of course.
