My Mrs has received a letter from Tesco, accusing her of parking in their car park from 07:40 and 16:25 on a particular day. She works from 8:30 – 17:30, and was at work on that day. She’s shown me the letter, so the question is what are the STW massif’s thoughts and suggested next steps?

If they are wrong tell them that they are mistaken, they've either noted the reg down wrong or something else is amiss. Tell them its in their interest not make mistakes like this in future and see what happens next.
You'll then discover that contrary to what you believed your wife leads a double life actually works in Tesco, and they are writing to her to give her a bllocking for a) parking in the customer carpark rather than the staff carpark and b) bunking off over an hour early.
In that case you'll have a new moral morass

You need to confront your wife. What she is doing in that car-park while she is meant to be at work is not the issue. It's the lack of trust that will destroy your relationship.
(Although she's probably giving hand relief to sailors, and it's obviously not going well or she could afford to pay the parking charges.)

Tesco are into everything now, even starting a business as divorce solictors. They do of course need to build an available market that knows where to park.

Indeed, mind you I find doing the same for sailors in the Waitrose carpark pays much better - it's obviously the officers shopping there. Much cleaner pants too.

I can't make out if this is serious or not... but I'll bite. So let's work this through. You've been married to your wife for... how long? And you think that it's more likely she parked in Tesco's for 9 hours straight one day than that either a) she stopped in Tesco's on the way into work and then on the way home again and they figured she'd been there all day b) someone's cloned your reg plate or c) they're just plain wrong.
But seriously, ignore it. As the letters get more threatening, carry on ignoring them/ writing back to say it clearly wasn't you. At some point either Tesco will have to show proof or your wife will admit she parked the car there all day. Solved

Of course, what he's really upset about is having to admit that his wife shops at Tesco. He tells all his friends she only ever goes to Waitrose.

Well the way I see it is this. Firstly, no I'm not trolling, this is true, I could post the letter on here, but I am a bit reticent to give you lot the details.
I do trust the old girl, besides at our time of life if someones hitting on her I could hardly blame her for taking advantage, despite Grumms assertions, I'm not a hypocrite, so it would only be fair after all ......
However, a less trusting couple or one that was having troubles could be totally blown by this sort of thing. She definately wasn't there at those times, she was at work..... apparently
gulp...Not worried about parking fines or any of that old guff, but the "what were you doing there" thing is quite serious.... surely?

As mentioned, I'd be more concerned about whether someone is driving round with your missus' reg no. stuck on their car OR that Tesco have written the number down wrong & they are pursuiing the wrong person.
And how have they got your address details from just the reg. no. Does the DVLA dish this kind of stuff out to all and sundry?Do they just have the reg. no. or a description of the car?

Right I've now scanned the letter to a TIF file and can email it, can't put it on flickr, coz I'm too thick, but if anyone genuinely thinks I'm trolling I'll sen d you a copy.
They have the car reg, no make details, and they have obviously got our address via the DVLA. I think the car parking wallas do this routinely nowadays though.

Just got this joke by email and it seemed topical in the circumstances. . .
Tired of constantly being broke & stuck in an unhappy marriage, a young husband decided to solve both problems by taking out a large insurance policy on his wife with himself as the beneficiary, and then arranging to have her killed.
A 'friend of a friend' put him in touch with a nefarious dark-side underworld figure who went by the name of 'Artie.'
Artie then explained to the husband that his going price for snuffing out a spouse was £5,000..
The husband said he was willing to pay that amount, but that he wouldn't have any cash on hand until he could collect his wife's insurance money.
Artie insisted on being paid at least something up front, so the man opened his wallet, displaying the single £1 Coin that rested inside. Artie sighed, rolled his eyes, & reluctantly agreed to accept the £1 as down payment for the dirty deed.
A few days later, Artie followed the man's wife to the local Tesco Super Store. There, he surprised her in the produce department & proceeded to strangle her with his gloved hands & as the poor unsuspecting woman drew her last breath & slumped to the floor.....
The manager of the produce department stumbled unexpectedly onto the murder scene. Unwilling to leave any living witnesses behind, ol' Artie had no choice but to strangle the produce manager as well.
However, unknown to Artie, the entire proceedings were captured by the hidden security cameras & observed by the store's security guard, who immediately called the police. Artie was caught & arrested before he could even leave the store.
Under intense questioning at the police station, Artie revealed the whole sordid plan, including his unusual financial arrangements with the hapless husband who was also quickly arrested.
The next day in the newspaper, the headline declared ..

The letter is a try on. Write back saying she wasn't there and ask for some proper proof - just for your amusement as ther is absolutly nothing they can do.

People who clone cars don't normally travel around the same area - although there's some seriously dim people around so who knows?
Don't Tescos use those sensors in the parking bay & then send someone out to take the details if it overstays? - I'm sure I've heard of those going wrong big time
FWIW - I'd still ignore it, I wouldn't get into any sort of dialogue with the parking enforcement company

On a serious note G,
this happened to a friend of mine - was accused of abusing parking in the town LIDL.
Someone was wandering around with her number plate though as the vehicle make and colour recorded were nowhere close to a match.
If Tesco is making a case against you, they need to prove that you car (i.e. make and colour) was there, not just your number plate.

Incidentally I've now emailed the scan to zokes and tankslapper who may well be more computer literate than me, so at least they can confirm that I'm not trolling....... (don't know whatever made you think that 8O)
What actually winds my handle about this, is that I do actually know people who would be wondering what the hell was going on with their partner if they received one. I will admit that it did go through my mind, until I'd thought the thing through for a while, and decided that it didn't stack up that way.

I take Graham S's point. Why not write to Tesco asking them to prove who they are? If TESCO's can not prove who they are (photo ID card, blood sample, DNA test, retinal scans - the usual stuff) then threaten to the case to the police for impersonating a retail giant.

I'm not sure why any of this is an issue. THey moaned she was parked there. She wasnt parked there (or was, but you have bigger problems then) so write back and say you were not parked there, they are wrong and there's sod all they can do about it if it were true anyway. End of story. Next cuppa.
As to how they get your details - they ask the DVLA. Shop near my old place used to have cameras that monitored you in and out of the car park, staying longer than 2 hours got you a £30 fine sent out automatically. But there wre signs all over that car park saying you could only stay 2 hours and there would be a fine etc etc

Go back and question Tesco. Say your wife and car was elsewhere, can they give more details/prove? Say you'll shop forever more in ASDA and hopefully they'll try and blag you with a free chocolate bar at the least for the concern.
If Tesco are serious to follow it up, can your wife prove she was at work? Clocking in or colleauges?

We left our car at Tescos for over a week whilst on honeymoon earlier this year, as it was very close to the station we use to get to the airport. And it's free.
No problems at all, and there were no signs I could find saying we couldn't do this.
