Looks like i might be spending february in Auckland, I have a wedding to attend but that is only one day out of 3-4 weeks, not going to have a lot of money so a tour of the country is probably not going to happen on this trip.
So what can i do in Auckland and the near area?
fancy sea kayaking and have done it once in the bay of islands, is it possible around auckland itself? anything else???

Not recommending the company below (I have no knowledge of them, but their website was the most informative I just googled) and have never sea kayaked to Rangitoto, but can recommend the island itself as a place to visit!

Do you rock climb? If so I'd say head to Mount Eden Quarry if you have a morning or afternoon free. I was last there a few years ago, but I can't imagine it has stopped being a friendly place to climb some nice lines and relax! Also likely to meet folk heading a bit further afield and you may be able to join?
Edited to say that the reason I say 'plenty of sea kayaking' when I've never done it is that there were always lots of them out and about along the north shore coast!
You should really try and get out and about a bit. I mean, if funds are limited you can probably hitch reasonably well outside the main tourist areas.
I'd personally try and get to the Coromandel, you'll easy hitch round there. Lots of lovely spots. If you can get a vehicle you'll find lots of off beat places that you won't get to otherwise.
For paddling in Akl call Fergs Rock & kayak at Akhu bay, they do kayak rental etc. Also there are various trips up and aroudn Whagaparoa etc.
Despite what you hear Akl is a nice city just quite spread out with no real heart as such. Transport is the best you'll find in NZ.
Ferry out to Waiheke as well, ncie day or three out.
yeah get out of the place, maybe a tour of northland, coromandel, go to some of the island (which the ferries serve from auckland).
i intend to try, but at this moment, accommodation is sorted, in Auckland, money may well be short. I have been to NZ before so want to see things i didn't last time. Want to go over to Coromandel, I would like to do a bit of walking not so sure about SO being happy for me to disappear for a few days.
At this moment I don't know how much car hire is or fuel, to get out of the city, so just getting ideas, etc.
Rent a dent pretty cheap. Fuel $2.20ish for a litre of 91 octane.
Another vote for leave, buy a car as NZCol has said then sell it when you leave, cars are cheap to run. You are only four hours from Taupo/Rotorua there is loads of biking and walking around there.
Auckland museum is quite good, having said that, but thats only one day ! Hang out on in Ponsonby. Do you surf at all ? Ever wanted to ??
I rented a car from auckland fot 4 pounds a day - was an utter shitter but served us well we drove to cape reinga and hundred mile beach and that area - take a tent !
February you say - is that when chinese new year is ? Its a huge thing in auckland . The big park whos name escapes me in the centre is worth a wander . Best firework display ive ever seen !
