   I need a new laptop- the keyboard on my Toshiba Satellite has died and it's motherboard related. I've been thinking about getting a netbook because I never carry my normal laptop around as it's too bulky for my backpack (which somewhat defeats the object).

   I never use CDs, and mostly use my laptop for t'internets and research rather than actual work.

   What sort of price gets a good one (ideally I'd like another Toshiba, I'm very happy with mine)? I see even a £200 one has more hard disk space and ram than my 3 year old £600 laptop!

   Are they easy to live with? I'm figuring if it makes me use it more as a laptop then I'll get my value for money out of it.

   small, light, cheap. All three are true. What you tend to sacrifice with net books is speed, battery life and visibility. Not all neccessary at the same time.

   I'm typing this now on an Acer 10" which is fine for browsing the internet and stuff and I can carry it around with me without even knowing it's there but the battery life is a bit pants (2 hours) and it does sometimes get a bit upset and lock for a few seconds while it tries to deal with some especially complicated download.

   Saying that, I think it's ace and at 150 quid can I really complain?

   It plays videos and music great and is perfect for wwhat I used it for (taking with me when I'm working away from home and watching videos in my hotel room)

   I'm told the high end toshiba netbooks have massive battery life and are really well put together.

   I've had a Samsung NC10 for about 15 months now and had no issues with it. Performance is decent, battery life excellent (7 hours) and portability fantastic. I've a 14" laptop for work use for web browsing and when travelling the netbook is excellent.

   My daughter has one of the Samsung N110's for note-taking at university and likes it a lot, although she doesn't use it at home much as she has a 15" laptop as well. The N110 is very similar to the NC10 but seems to have slightly better battery life.

   Both were a bit over £300.

   Netbooks are nice, but 11.6" screen would be my minimum, 10" is too small, 11.6" has full size keyboard, and my other half loves her Acer. 3-4h of battery life. Check out this store Argos Clearance on eBay

   They have Samsung netbooks and a very nice MSI Wind and a nice 11.6" Acer, all for under £200, the MSI looks very nice as it's around £160.

   Intel Atom struggles a bit with some graphics and flash (STW ads slowed it down quite a lot) but apart from that they are portable and easy to use. Just don't get one with Vista, XP should be nice and quick.

   I can highly recommend an Asus Eee 1005HA. Light, long battery life, very well made, massive amount of online support, since Eees have a bit of a geeky following.
