Now I'm quite partial to a bit of jazz-funk, and a bit of Herbie Hancock. But is it just me or does this all go horribly horribly wrong after around 1:25?

Herbie Hancock NEVER goes horribly wrong.

Its does have a more than a tinge of that discordant modern jazz feel to it

Not really

From Herb's perspective I imagine it was bang on, I though tit sounded a bit crap.

The Keytar soloing has a strong tinge of utter bolloks IMO - sounds like a small child doing a pisstake of a jazz solo.
Posted 7 months ago # -
its just because its a stupid, dated sounding instrument. Would have sounded fresh and exciting at the time I'm sure. Proper organ, or even dare I say it, a Piano would sound better?

I was just about to post that it sounds like it cut to me playing at 1 minute in, but grum beat me to it

I'm just happy a jazz thread has finally emerged on STW.
Most over-rated/under-rated jazz legend ever, anyone?

Man...I'm really blowing!!!

It's not just the instrument though is it - the playing is awful IMHO. Which is weird because they must be super-talented to be playing with Herbie.

Dunno really - I've been enjoying this modern jazz album though:

It all went wrong when I saw the drummer's haircut.

Reminds me of Toejam and Earl

Just nod harder the more chromatic he gets.

Can't stand jazz personally, but that bit where the keyboard comes in in a competely different key is fudging HILARIOUS!
Anyone who doesn't think so is a pretentious pillock. Just saying, like!Posted 7 months ago # -
that would have been alright without that awful keyboard playing and out of tune sax....
Posted 7 months ago # -
2:39 is a particularly good bit too
It kind of reminds me of this

That is the funniest thing I've heard in ages. Farking brilliant.
I'm sending that to my mate.Posted 7 months ago # -
Oh grum, you are entertaining me with your musical hilarity today. Thank you!
(what is clapton supposed to be doing in that clip btw?)BTW, if you do actually like jazzwank - there's a new bloke called Austin Peralta who is supposed to be good. Its beyond my comprehension though.
Posted 7 months ago # -
That Austin Peralta album is excellent, as is the Thundercat one.
Austins dad was stacey peralta - the skateboarder...
Posted 7 months ago # -
Is jazzwank a subgenre like be bop?
And this Austin Peralta is a jazzwanker, you say?
Posted 7 months ago # -
Yep, its like technobollocks. But jazzier.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Austin seems to have made a success of it:

two CDs released by Sony by the time he was 16

Sounds like an exciting jazz breakout.

I don't want to spoil it, but go to youtube and read some of the comments on the Clapton video.

Sums the genre up for me, and believe me I have tried to like it/appreciate it. That clip sounds the same as most of it to me ie. let's try and be clever and play lots of discordant notes out of sync with each other with a suitably smug expression and let the equally smug audience bask in their own (self-procalimed) superior taste.Posted 7 months ago # -
Is this based on Herbie Hancock?
Posted 7 months ago # -

Try harder.

Woody, it seems you have insecurity issues.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Sounds brilliant to me,thanks for the link!
Posted 7 months ago # -
Don't think it's going to change now and believe me, I've been to enough live gigs where mates have been gigging with some reasonably well known people to realise it's not for me.
Why insecure Grum? Just my opinion and we can't all like the same things.

Makes sense.
Not being into it is fair enough, it's just all this stuff that smacks of insecurity/mental health issues.

It sounded like Herbie went too far out for the saxophonist - it's barely-concealed panic in his eyes when he tries to bridge in from Herbie's first solo. He then lost the feel of it and couldn't pull it back. Even when Herbie tried lightening the intensity a little the guy just stayed freaked. It's not necessarily a measure of his ability though: sometimes as a player you just don't 'get it'. Don't forget how hard an act somebody like Herbie is to follow. The sax guy starts to settle at around 3 mins, although he doesn't really seem to relax until Herbie leaves the stage.
