Thought about getting one, then found a hazel stick at a country event at Westonbirt which is perfect, just the right length, and with an angled piece at the top which is exactly the correct angle to hold. Put a metal foot on, stripped the bark, sanded smooth and oiled, cost about eight quid, total..

You could wave your sticks as a greeting to bike riders, or suddenly decide to wave them around like a helicopter just as a cyclist passes.
Walkerists do it for me.

Broke my ankle earlier this year and bought some as I firmly believe they (may) have saved me
Have always used them when winter climbing (heavier pack, ice and snow etc making for more slippy walking) and used cheapo Aldi ones
Have bought some Black Diamond Z poles as one of the most important things for me was the small pack size when not in use as I mostley use them on the walk into climbs or scrambles and they always get in the way catching on stuff on the outside of my sack like action man radio pack
Definitly better than the cheap ones, lighter and easier to swing, pack size as mentioned and lighter when packed meaning I am more likely to take them as there is little weight penalty
Still feel like a lemon walking on a road with them but would rather do that than break another ankle

a revelation to me a few years ago when I borrowed my mate's Leki poles though I wouldn't buy those if you are thinking of winter walking as I found the screw to tighten mechanism unscrews with my natural twisting of my arms on impact. get ones with a clip lock for snow plodding.
Always use the pavement tips if you are on loose flatish ground as unecessary stabbing at the ground causes accelerated erosion

Quite like these Black Diamond Contour Elliptic Walking Poles, on sale at complete outdoors at mo. I like their fastening thingy - flick locks, so easier to work than trying to twist pole for collapse/ extend. About to buy some myself

I use the cheapest ones that Go Outdoors sell, they're their own brand ones and were a tenner a pair. They've been used all round Scotland in summer and winter, and I used them in the Alps this summer.
I'm considering a set of Black Diamond ones (similar to the link) as they're silly light, but the one benefit I can see of the telescopic ones is that you can bury one to make a decent belay if you absolutely have to.
