I've just been reading a few rumours about the new Sram 12 speed X01 groupset. Does anyone really need a 50T rear cassette? Real or a clever fake?

Must be, I obviously spend too much time out riding and not enough time on the web, so enlighten me, is it real or fake?

OP,
From the website you linked to:
"Due to an embargo until 24 March, images and reviews were not meant to be posted in the public domain."
That's why all the images have EMBARGO 03-24-2016 on them.
That means it should not be published until that time. The Muppets that received the press release and released it early will not be seeing many more press releases from SRAM.
That assumes that the press release did actually originate from SRAM and the whole thing is not an elaborate wind up.
