Specific tyre conundrum

I know we all love a bit of 'what tyre for XYZ trail' on here
Having to resurrect my old Genesis due to Bfe drivetrain woes for a ride in the north downs on Monday.

Tyre-wise I have a worn High Roller and a couple of brand new Ardents, which I believe are more a summer tyre.

Which would be best up front on the bike, given I expect the conditions will be muddy and slushy and generally meh underfoot?

Or put differently, what kinda specific considerations do you need for the back wheel and what for the front wheel as I don't get the logic yet behind using different combinations? Any helpful tutoring appreciated.

Put something grippy on the front and fast rolling but less grippy on the back. Most rolling resistance from the rear. Easier to cope with a back-end slide than the front letting go. Ardent on the back, High Roller on the front, though if the HR is really worn, you might be better off with a new Ardent on the front as well, which works okay in the mostly mudless Peak, though maybe not on your local riding.

Hmmmmmm. Thanks for the input.

The Ardent on the back is freaking massive and brand new. The High Roller (2.1 I think) looks spindly by comparison at the front, and worn.

Confused!
