Does anyone really expect to get anywhere near the published MPG figures?? When you look at the way in which the cars are driven to get the figures you'll know why. It's about a 25 mile test route driven by professional drivers who can apply a feather foot and in conditions that are perfect for the engine. There'l only be enough fuel in the car to cover the distance too.
I've driven a few 1.6 Diesels and if you're the type who wants to hog the middle lane at 56mph then they're for you, if you want to actually turn up to meetings on time at a sensible pace and not feel the need the get out the car and push it quicker yourself then get a proper diesel (2.0) and drive it sensibly. That said 1.6D I've driven were large saloon cars and small(er) cars like Fabia's/A3's etc would be better.
I have a 155bhp Toyota Avensis Tourer, drove it up to Scotland and back, three bike rack on the tow bar and one on the roof, four blokes and all the crap we carry and it still managed 42mpg cruising at 80mph , on my own at 70mph it'll do 46mpg.
I'd still have one though over a Prius....
