Suggested Spouse take eldest son up to Cairngorm this weekend for skiing as have Monday off aswell. Do the people in the know think it's a good idea to make the journey from Yorkshire? And if so, where's best to stay that's not too pricey for 3 nights. They are experienced alpine skiers btw. It's looking a little wild up there at the mo' judging by the webcam!

Trying to get that way myself, too. Something tells me not to book accommodation until it's actually needed!! Mind you, I'm staying tue/wed/thu nights so might be easier.

Lol - Now does that mean they have skied in Scotland many times before, or they have skied in the Alps many times before ?
If its the latter they will be in for a rude awakening! Even on a crystal clear day in good conditions, skiing in Scotland does not compare to the Alps. Snow fences and rocks are to be found every where, and blink and your at the bottom of the run.
When I was a lad my parents used to drive me up there from Yorkshire many a weekend for races. Some times you would drive up on a Friday with the race on, only to wake up the next day and all the snow had melted or been blown away.
The other thing to consider in Scotland is that if the weather is good ie you can see more than 2 meters in front of your skis, every man and his dog goes, so the lift que's are ridiculous and you will spend all day queing.
If the weather is bad (which 9 out of 10 it will be) the ques are not that bad, but you can't see where you are going, you get blown off the hill and ice gets launched in to your face at 100mph.
So either check to make sure there is a high pressure system over scotland, or plan it so you are directly between frontal systems. Or do the sensible thing and book cheap last minute flights and go to the alps for a long weekend without paying much more money in total.

FunkyD, Spouse has skied many times in Scotland and Alps as he's very old. Son, 13 has been skiing every year, but one, in Alps since age 5. I'll grant you Cairngorm is different and queues that are found everywhere, are annoying. They could go to Alps for weekend but Spouse fancies returning to Scotland. But I'll take your advice.

risky. the gusts over sunday would be,at a guess, 50mph+. Monday calms down a bit but could easily be as bad. the temps at 900ft on sunday will be around -6c. colder on sunday eve into monday morning.
On monday you could be looking at -9c at the ptarmigan with a 30mph wind if yer lucky.
Sometimes it pays off to just head out there and it can often be totally diffrent to what they predicted. The people that can afford to do this might squeeze in half a week of perfect conditions throughout a season... if you fluke it for monday,you will be very lucky!
