Having a bad night fixing my soon to be ex-bosses retro bike. Bleeding like a stuck pig due to a bit of stupidity with cable cutters and having a bit of brain freeze. Should the cable be clamped onto the mech with the cable fully extended from the shifter when shifted to one end of the movement or the other?

Not quite sure what you’re asking, I think what you need to know is that the chain should be on the smallest cog on the rear cassette when you clamp it. Check the park tools website for really great repair info.
