Seat Leon TDI Cupra 150PS (PD engine), 2004.
The sinister warning light that looks an engine came on as I started it up on the way home from work. Car seems to be running ok and the timing belt was replaced at 60000 miles (now on 90000).
What might it be and how much might it cost me?
Is that the exhaust management warning light? Is so could be a lamda sensor - about £90 to fix at the local garage and nothing to worry about. Unless like my vw golf it has a nox sensor - £400 to fix but not essential (i've not fixed mine).
as above. as they get older they get a bit smokey and the EM complains. it'll likely to off again in a week or so. my 03 tdi did that. no other symptoms.
If you know anyone with vag-com get them to hook it up and check the diagnostics codes.
Orange or red? Orange probably exhaust, red see dealer. Go and run it at 50 mph in 3rd for 15 mins or so. Usually clears it if exhaust.
MrsP had that one come on on her TT - apparently it's not really an emissions warning light at all, it's a 'something's wrong with the engine and it could be really simple or really expensive' light.
Orange so no immediate concern.
It's going in to have the codes checked tomorrow. Lambda sensor seems to be a common fault when I googled the problem.

My Cupra had all sorts of engine management issues, which I chased around for ages.
new turbo dump valve, lamba sensors (think there's two), and loads of pipework around the turbo, airflow mass sensor (?).
in the end, one of the probs was an elbow shaped air recirculation pipe front left of the engine, which was perforated inside the elbow, so the whole thing was sucking pressure.

Orange may well be exhaust - mine comes on about once a week in my 1.6 petrol Leon
Just had the same light on our ('07, 88k) Golf GT TDi. I was advised (on here) to check the fuses under the bonnet, which I did and one had blown...... it blew again immediately when replaced.
This is a good pointer towards a faulty inlet flap motor - another is if the engine shakes a little when you turn it off. You cannot repair it, replacement only - part cost was £227 but pretty easy to fit (with the right tools) so just £65 for fitting.
Of course it could be something else.....

Glow plugs. All fixed now.
