Removing yourself from Facebook - How?

I joined Facebook to keep in touch with a friend while she travelled. I have since added a few more friends but the only time I use Facebook is when I get people asking to be my friend or to remove tags when people have tagged me in photos.

After swearing again about forgetting my password and having to reset it and not being able to reuse anything I have used before I decided to deactivate my account.

I then get an email saying that I can reactivate it at any time and see all my existing data. I haven't loaded much data on there, perhaps a couple of pictures and a few comments so I don't want it keeping but I guess they are keeping my email address and all the passwords I have used previously.

Do Facebook now own that data and so can keep it or can I get it properly wiped?

I don't think you can actully remove youself, just remove most of the evidence of you being there, but the account will still be there.

You can close the account and provided you don't try and log in or access it in any way for 2 weeks you then 'disappear'. This worked for me earlier this year (August). If you so much as look at it in the two week time period it will be reactivated. The problem is people try and log back in just to see if it has been closed......

As someone once said, if don't pay for it then you are the product not the customer.

It quite probably has changed but it looks like the logging back in still reactivates it, so submit the request then leave well alone.

Yeah, you just ask them to deactivate and it takes a couple of weeks.

I found facebook useful when it started and loads more user friendly, but then I realised everyone under the sun was on it, including the people sat opposite me at work.

Why would I want to be 'friends' with them?

Interesting...the Delete option says you won't be able to access any of the content...it doesn't say that the content will be removed.

From what I understand - nothing is removed, just hidden from views...so everything you ever do on Facebook is stored on servers owned by Facebook...you upload a picture and then delete it? It's still there, just not available for you to view...but Facebook have a copy of it...post something up and remove? It's still there just not available...etc.

The Delete option doesn't say anything about removing your content from the Facebook system, just tells you that you won't be able to access it again...so no doubt some social engineering and social study type systems on Facebook will be crawling over all the data to get formula's and results and reports sorted for Facebook to use for statistical and targeted stuff.

Thought I'd mention it...that is how it used to be and I've not seen or read anything to suggest that deleting your account actually deletes any content you have ever added to Facebook.

logging back in reactivates it. I shut an old account which was playing up ages ago, over a year ago, and started a new one. On my wedding day for some reason my husband decided to 'frape' me in the morning but opened the old account forgetting that I had a new one and it reopened just the same so it definitely doesn't disappear if you deactivate then leave it for two weeks. Just accept that you sold your soul to the internets, it's too late, your doomed. Sorry
