Had a look at some previous threads but not quite what I was looking for.

Commute 30-32 miles round trip on a hybrid with 700c 32mm maxxis columbieres. Presta valve makes slime filling tricky/not possible.

Wondered what your views are and what you’d recommend please:
    – presta preslimed tubes (Slime, Dr Sludge, other ?)
    – Weldtite Sureride or Slime Tube Protector strip or similar anti-puncture tape/strip between tube and tyre
    – different type of tyre
    – something else ?

or just keep carrying a couple of spare tubes, leave home a bit earlier and pray ?

I have used slime protector strips and they were OK but I am a big fan of the conti protection tyres

This is the one I have used – available in 700c as well

I had sludge tubes and they didn’t work

Armoured tyres work well. Mine are Michelin city contact or something. £10 each on CRC. The only punctures I’ve had have been from 3 inch nails. I always leave bit of extra time to get to work. I also carry the usual tube and park sticky patches in case I get more than one pucture.

I also carry some thin nitrile gloves because I hate arriving at work with filthy black hands if I’d had a puncture.

I used slime tyre liners on my mountain bike, and suffered one puncture in 1,200 miles. I bought the roadie equivalent when I bought a roadie bike, even using Continental Ultragators, and suffered a puncture every 40 – 50 miles. I’ve done a bit of research, and I think that if you use the tyre liners with a very high PSI, it can damage the tubes. I’m now using Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres with slimed tubes, and have been fine so far.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Looks like it’s the tyre and possibly slimed tubes – and think I’ll avoid the liners as I inflate the tyres to around 90psi (they’re 100 max).
    Cheers 🙂

I tried this south african sealant called sludge. Its not the same sludge as slime and the stuff you find in most shops. Its latex sealant. You will have to get it off the web.I think the company is called velosport who distribute it.Comes in 100ml bottles(says for road use) And is designed to go straight on a any presta valve tube. You will need to put 100mm per tyre in MTB.Hybrids or road about 50ml per tube.great stuff! Swapped tyres the other day, 4 thorns and tube was still up! popped it back in with other tyre and still up to full pressure! Great for weight weenies as its very light and have been using it with race tyres and superlight tubes wth no problems! Think bike radar reviewed it at one time.
    Thanx Max

Thanks Turnerfan1. Didn’t know about this one. Found it on bikeradar at http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/tools/puncture-repair-kit/product/puncture-sealant-30813 and for sale at http://www.velokit.co.uk/cart_productdetails.asp?PRODUCTID=2604 At £9 for two wheels, should be worth a try.
    Cheers C
