Does anyone know how to make a picture paler so you can put text over it ?

What version on you using? In 2003 (and probably other versions) right click on the picture and select Format Picture then go to the Picture tab. From there you can select Washout from the Color drop down menu in the Image Control section or teak brightness and contrast manually using the sliders.
