   Having recently upgraded my music/TV system i'm in the market for a Blu-ray player. As i'm also looking to transfer all my music onto a hard drive for playback through the new AV Reciever plus having a wifi link to the 'net, would a PS3 be a good purchase?

   My thinking is that it is all this in one package but i've no need or desire for a gaming system - i'll never use it for that.

   How easy is it to use in such a manner when compared to a wifi-enabled dedicated Blu-ray player for example?

   A Blu-ray player is around £90 plus i'd need to buy a seperate hard drive (some kind soul on here sent me a free one but it won't talk to my amp )

   MsD works for 'Game' and could obtain a pre-owned PS3 for 20% off marked price..

   the bluray element of the PS£ is undoubtedly excellent, as is the freeview usage if you combine it with play tv.

   i don't find the music playback that useable, to be honest. although the quality is good and it will indeed wirelessly play music from the computer, scrolling through the menus to find what you want to play is fairly cumbersome so i use a squeezebox for that instead.

   I wouldn't be using it to play music from the computer, rather i'd be storing the music on the internal hard drive and playing back from there - what is the set up like for that idea?

   (as you can tell i've never owned a modern games system)

   sorry, i wasn't clear about that. i've done both, but never end up playing anything stored on the PS3's HD as it's the same process to scroll through the content whether it's wirelessly streaming or local.

   basically you have to hold down on the joypad/remote and it scrolls down. but it takes forever and i have a lot of music!

   If you decide to get one, Sainsbury are/were? doing the 160gb version for £158 - I just got one to replace my bloody noisy 1st gen PS3 (which I sold on Ebay for £122).

   

   If using it just as a Bluray player I would suggest you might like to get the remote too (another £20 or so).

   My money would always be on an acer revo if you are after something to plug into a tv & hifi for online content plus stored music and movies.

   Hi,

   I wnet down the PS3 route, and it is a bit of a pain without an associated (external) media server.

   1. Out of the box the PS3 allows a pretty flat file structure combined with with very basic indexing via the tags and no search system then you have to scroll through all tags to get where you want.
   2. If you add an external usb drive (if/when) you run out of room you will find the external tracks indexed alphbetically per album rather than by track order.
   3. If you use the PS3 to rip CDs, you are limited in the rip formats and it only uses a few (one?) on-line resources to get track info & cover art, so if you have anything obscure or old, it may not find the info you want.
   4. Surfing is a pain with the game-pad.
   5. BBC iPlayer HD is excellent.
   6. It all works much better with an external media server, but more money, more complexity.

    PS3s are very easy to use and will do everything you want and more, shame not to play games on it though.

    press square(?) to change the music category listing. Choosing either "Artist" or "alphabetical" order should be quick and easy.

    GW, true about the sorting but unless i'm mistaken there's no search facility so however you sort it scrolling through hundreds of entries takes too long!

    Hmm, stuff to think about there, thanks everyone.

    I'm looking for a hard drive i can load a couple of hundred CD's onto, and a blu-ray player that will allow me to connect to the net and use something like lovefilm etc.
    I thought the PS3 would be a good do-it-all system but now i'm even more confused...

    A PS3 will do all that - I guess you just may have to be a little bit patient with the music searching though (although I am sure there will be workarounds).

    From personal experience, I've found the media codecs used by the PS3 very substandard. The same music file sounds better when streamed from the pc via Tversity compared to when played straight from the PS3. I have an original huge PS3 though, so the codecs may have been changed in the new ones.

    That said, you'll not find many bits of kit better equipped to act as an all-round media centre than a PS3

    If you want a BD player and a games console, then the PS3 will do the job admirably. It's a consummate BD player, not a gimmicky afterthought.

    If, however, you've no interest in a games console, then you'd be better served with a dedicated unit. A modern standalone player will be better and cheaper than the PS3 on the basis of Blu-ray alone.

    Ah.. see what you mean. i generally just stick a big playlist on random and skip tracks I'm not in the mood for with the controller, same as I do with any music player really.

    to add anything on to your hd on your PS3 you will need to format your harddrive from NFTS to FAT32.

    All folder names must be in capital letters. In the root directory of your drive, create folders named "PICTURE", "MUSIC", and "VIDEO". If you do not create these folders, your media files will not display when selecting the USB drive on your PS3
