A few years ago there was a memorial day where a Lanc. bomber dropped thousands of poppies over London, it sort of made me queasy to see what that symbol had become. My family have a long history of military involvement, and I put money in the tin, and goodness knows I’ve done my fair share of collecting, and helping out at the Legion, but I don’t wear a poppy any more.

I live near Headley Court, the rehabilitation centre for injured services personnel. The local residents objected to the presence of the establishment, fearing it would lower property values.
