'scuse my ignorance, but is today a significant date in the Pagan calender? If so, what's the traditional way to celebrate? (err..corkscrew and bottle opener are within reach...cough)

we usually go outside and drink something alcoholic that was made at the summer solstice. (this evening, we've settled for sloe gin (autumn equinox) in the absence of anything stronger)

Hmm..sounds good.
My wife has mentioned something about 'Yule' being some non-Christian midwinter thing. Anyway, sounds like the perfect opportunity for having a schnifter.

Booze, burning things, carnal fun. (Provided the missus isn't done in from a 5 hour trip to Asda with her mam.)
(Ronald Hutton's Stations of the Sun has a very good section on the histories and stories of midwinter/New Year festivities)

Cheers HeathenWoods, think I'll treat myself to that book - it's just the sort of thing I was after.

I'm going out for a really early Winter Solstice ride tomorrow. And probably wine tonight.

I've acknowledged Meán Geimhridh by lighting my fire with logs cut in autumn and drinking 3 bottles of Abbott Ale

Christmas was originally a pagan mid winter festival that was hijacked by the christians - shame they didn't leave it as it was.

I celebrated yesterday by watching the sunrise & dawn at Avebury.
Terry the Druid & about 80 other people were there.
The snow made it utterly magical.
Shame about the roadsPosted 2 years ago # -
Christmas is just Saturnalia. Nothing to do with some work shy hippy getting nailed to anything.
