    “Win a Black Bastard BBQ”

    😯

When it was pointed out to the company that the name of the BBQ was less than ideal, they responded:

“Black Bastard Barbecue in our campaign is in no way meant to be offensive. (…) We chose this barbecue for its capacity and not for its name. We didn’t create the barbecue nor its name. Of course, we recognise that the name can be experienced as controversial in a certain context, but let’s be clear that we are not in any case referring to a person, but to a barbecue.”

    Well, that’s all right then.

No surprise. They also claim that “Black Pete” black and white mistrels-style dessed up kids are not racist, and that their black skin, curly hair, and swollen lips comes from when these characters come down the chimney. Behind the laid back image of bikes, smokes and pancakes, Holland is a thoroughly racist society.

I can see the cultural difference though. Lots of words/meanings conflict IMO cross languages

(im not defending any intended racism though) i.e Belgium antics that we experienced

If it were a one-off, yes, you could say it was just cultural differences, but it is not that long ago that a biscuit company was pressured to rename it’s biscuits:

It isn’t that long ago that robertsons were also pressured into stopping using gollywogs. Lets not pretend the UK hasn’t had to make some much needed changes over the past 20-30 years.

Nice straw man but my point was pertinent to the claim that the Dutch are a wee bit racist

Black Peter is quite an old tradition though isn’t it?

    15th century or summink?

Good kids get a present from Sinterklaas, but bad kids will be taken to Spain in Black Peter’s sack

Not wanting to rake up the Australia is racist thread….but we have “Coon” cheese.

Koen – pronounced coon, is a pretty popular name in Holland. We know a couple, they’ve both had problems in America and we got a few funny looks over here when one visited last week and I did have to explain the situation to one tutting couple in a restaurant.

There is growing opposition to Zwarte Piet, but as mentioned a large proportion of Dutch people think it’s fine. My first Christmas over there we went to the Sinterklaas parade with some friends from Olkahoma, when they first saw the Piets they couldn’t believe it, “they would last 30seconds in Oklahoma before getting shot!” was the final verdict.

The Dutch do seem to use English swear words rather liberally though with zero censorship on TV or Radio, WTF was used during meetings at work fairly regularly – even when speaking in Dutch.

It is quite stange how they use strong English swear words, but it is not uncommon for people to take considerable offence if you say “God damn” in Dutch.

Not really, they’re still a fairly religious country.

Zwarte Piet is being replaced by multicoloured Piet anyway. While many people from other countries thought it offensive, the tradition that goes with it where most of the country line the streets in celebration and community elation should be the envy of the world. The only reason we’d get a turnout like that here is for a Black Wednesday sale….. Hold on, that sounds dodgy now 😉

The Netherlands is a tolerant, peaceful, kindhearted place. Doe normaal.

True but less so than the US – where “God damn” is used without equivalent censure – maybe I should have said intriguing rather than strange.
