Whether figure skating's a sport or not is a debate that we have to listen to every time the WO come round. But your description of those guys and girls is way off the mark. They're supremely fit. I'll chance my arm, but I wager the guy who comes last in the figure skating is fitter, more toned and coordinated than any of us here.
I'm afraid it's here to stay as far as the WO is concerned. And they have gone a fair distance to objectify the judging in so much as is possible for this competition.

In a sport where mental stability & stress avoidance is key, I had to feel a bit sorry for the Canadian guy. He made a pretty good race otherwise.

As was some of the speed skating! hora must be in his element given his partiality for Asians.
i'm sure they are extremely fit. So are the SAS but doesn't mean marching through jungles behind enemy miles should be in the Olympics. Let them prove their fitness without grinning and prancing if they want a credible medal.
Oh well, like I said, it's here to stay...I can see your point of view, but instead of getting pissed of with it, just let yourself go and enjoy it. 
I thought some of the mens' stuff was stunning myself.

boardercross? - awesome! it's a total bunfight, and we can all see who wins.
it's been the highlight so far for me...
(bunfight: entertaining, frantic and no one seemed to get seriously hurt)
the ladies bordercross was good viewing although I was waiting for one of them to do themselves some proper damage - the course was huge and many of them seemed to struggle. Much respect to them all.

surely ski/board-cross is more in line with the traditional aims of the olympics than the majority of other events. man vs man and all that.
boardercross has been the best thing in this years olympics by a long way.

Not to my tastes but it is more atheletic than say Curling. Gymnastics also requires a judge is that not allowed?
Can we not just appreciate different sports and not belittle those we dont like after all I am sure some people think that all Steve Peat does is point his bike downhill and let gravity propel him whilst holding on.

al, it's not the activity/people i dislike, but the fact that it's called a sport and an olympic one that that. if it was juggling chainsaws on sand i'd think the same. i think sports should have very definite objectives to judge success and smiling properly and hippy hand waving takes away from it.

Football needs a referee as do most martial arts and boxing- someone has to decide are they all rubbish now as well. What about decathlon someone decides on the points system etc.
All sports are different some like some some dont - what they do requires fitness and skill it is therefore a sport.
I kinda of agree with your broader point that certain things ...DARTS being my favourite but I do love watching it- are more like an ability than a sport but think you chose a bad example and reason.

No it's not. They wear ice skates. I think that's quite specialised. Try doing it in a pair of trainers

I keep thinking of that quote about "slings and arrows" even though it bears no relevance to darts...but when you're talking to someone in the pub about them and he or she says "ah, the arrows..." you know you're with a likeminded soul.
But JY, broadly, I'm in agreement with you on the figure skating. It is the pinnacle of endeavour for those competitors - the Olympic medal. And truly, I look at what they do and it looks so so difficult. Given that I look like an hour-old foal when on an ice rink... More than say the foootball medal is in the summer games or tennis or golf will be for example.
For my money the Olympic credo of 'Citius, Altius, Fortius' should be applied. If you don't win by being faster, stronger, or higher then bin it.

a line judge is used in tennis more out of tradition than anything else now, the line-judge could be replaced by cameras, or a 'replay-the-point' rule.

I only really watch the ski, snowboard and slide events - which I guess just leaves ice skating, ice hockey and curling which are all a bit YAWN

mtb 4x should become an olympic sport i think - after the success of boardercross. probably the only thing that might inhibit it becoming an olympic sport is that bmx and 4x are very similar so would bmx have to be dropped for 4x to come in?

what with 100m, 200m, etc running races in the olympics perhaps 4x stands a chance. Having said that the swimming and velodrome events have had a trimming havent they?

Boardercross/Skicross is superb racing. Like BMX on snow.
