It's not an excuse, because for a country where football is the national sport to the more or less complete exclusion of all others, Scotland should be producing more good players, but the population of Holland is some 16 million, compared to Scotland's five million.
We should be wondering why it is that nations like Denmark, or Slovenia, where football comes a distant third to skiing and basketball, are reaching more major finals and outperforming anything we ever managed there.

Sure thing mundiesmiester, you've got them bang to rights. It's only Celtic and Rangers fans who dislike each other. Imagine football clubs in the same league cultivating a rivalry. Tsk!
Of course, the fans of diddy teams from Scotland's most provincial and parochial backwaters all skip hand in hand to the game through fields of daisies, brandishing their Highers in ecumenism and singing Doh-a-deer. St Mirren fans. Morton fans. Hertz. Hibs. Auchinleck, Cumnock. All pyoor fraternal and Corinthian byraway. Just don't get them started on the English, the hypocritical shower of Farquhars.
