  • Non-XTR levers on XTR brakes?

So I was stupid enough to leave my commuter locked outside last night. This morning I found someone had walked away with the handlebar and both the front and the rare brakes. Stupidity never pays….

Anyway, since I have a pair of old XTR disc calipers (M965) but no matching levers, I'm wondering if it's possible to press these into service with any other Shimano levers. The older LX and XT stuff look like they have the right hose hardware, but do the master-pistons pump out the correct amount of fluid? Anyone has tried? Or should I just not bother?

Yep, all Shimano brakes and levers are totally interchangeable.

Got new M775 XT levers running on my M965 XTR calipers and they work just fine.

As njee says, all shimano calipers work with all levers. Your only issues come with the hoses, as some calipers need a 90 degree banjo, and some have a straight connection.
