  • Night riding – any tips?

Morning all, I’m doing the London to Brighton night ride this weekend, as are some others from here I believe. I’m comfortable about the ride itself, the distance shouldn’t be an issue. The night aspect is something I’ve never done before though – we’re leaving around 1am and likely riding around 4 hours, all being well.

I’m going to try to get to bed early on Fri and up early on Sat, then sleep Sat afternoon. Anyone got any handy tips from such events they can share about the sleep/tiredness issues?

(my email’s in my profile if you want to sponsor me 😉 )

If you use glasses, clear lenses.

You’ve seriously never ridden a bike in the dark before?

It’s a lot like riding in the day…

    Breathe.
    Pedal.
Stay on your side of the road.

    You’ll be fine.

You are aware it gets colder at night, right?

I’m going to counter both of those just to be a bit contrary 😀 I love riding at night by a full moon with a set of yellow driving glasses – it’s a great experience.

for TSY – it’s more the tiredness element that I haven’t had to worry about in the past, despite the odd mile covered by bike in the dark! but thanks, i’ll bear those tips in mind too. 🙂

Forecast looks great for you as well. Enjoy it, and just remember the hardest climb is the last one!

Its great fun – my first night ride finished about 2am, having riden from Edinburgh – Ballinluig – Edinburgh. Crossing the forth road bridge about 1am ish was great. Beware of the potholes if you are riding in a bunch.

    Warmer clothing is a must.

If you use a helmet light, turn it off before you look people in the eyes

Yeah, tip 1) don’t use night riding glasses, tip 2) you don’t always need the highest output on your light.
