New scam?

Just had a call from a geezer claiming to be from BT. Claimed I had overlooked a letter dated 1st March telling me I was overdue making a payment (said my direct debit had been refused, which is odd since I don't pay by direct debit) and if I didn't pay £150 immediately my phone line would be cut off. When I pointed out that I'd paid my bill the 20th of Feb and said he should sent the letter again or I'd end the call, he hung up. He'd withheld his number, naturally.

Phone still working...

As far as I can tell, the only info about me he had was the phone number and the address. Is this some chancer just going through the phone book hoping to scare somebody into handing over their credit card details? Anyone else had this?

I'd defintely get onto BT about this with the time of the call and see if they can trace it.

I've had a bunch of emails purporting to be from BT saying that there had been problems with payments etc. Funny, as the only thing I have of BT's is broadband and an email account, as I don't pay the bill, it's all in the name of my dad who lives with me. They're all scams.
[edit] Here's the text of one I had recently; I'm not the name on the bill.
Dear BT customer,

We are upgrading our database, Please update your profile to avoid any service suspension.

It's Sunday night. Hard enough trying to find someone from BT actually working 9 to 5 Monday to Friday, neve rmind Sunday evening

Taking tongue out of cheek, it's a scam. report it to BT

This is a scam I think.

There's also a trick whereby they "prove" they're from BT by appearing to cut you off. They tell you they're going to cut you off and then "hang up" saying they'll call back in a few minutes. You then try to make a call, and can't. When they call back you pay the money as they're obviously from BT

Of course they haven't really disconnected you, they've just put their phone on mute.

Was going to report it immediately but there's no number for BT outside office hours in the book

I'll be phoning them tomorrow morning - on my (still working) phone!

Defo a scam.

A few weeks ago I had a call from an African-sounding chap that flagged as international on the Caller ID and went like this, "Good afternoon Sir, my name is Stephen and I am calling from BT." Put the phone down immediately. Same international ID appeared on half a dozen calls over the next few days, all of which I ignored. They then stopped.

Bunch of scamming cockbags the lot of them. They should be rounded up and culled.

I have 2x phones here, side by side here.
The scammers ring one, I hang up, then they ring the other.
They're working down a list, which they no doubt bought.

Sometimes I have both phones ring at exactly the same time.
I pick them up, reverse one hand set, put them in a "69" position and time how long it takes them to twig they're talking with one another.

PS - it's doubtful BT's customer services or accounts dept will be open on a w/end, let alone a Sunday!

didn't we stop hanging people for stealing a sheep 200 years ago ? This is just a misdemeanour and deserves a hard stare...

True to form, it's just happened, 10:00 Monday morning. They got the "69" again from me & I wandered off to make a cuppa. No need getting stressed about it!

If you could clearly understand the caller- its a scam. If he/she had a really thick accent and sounded like they were reading from a sheet- its definitely BT

BT will probably be able to tarce the call even though it was witheld from the destination. Although the guy was probably working from a phone box or a PAYG mobile which will be untraceable

Today they changed the script. "Mr, you are having problems with your computer".
Now tell me something I didn't already know!

One answer: tell them it's not a BT line (mine isn't).
Or it's a residential address / a business they're calling.
It always gets them off the 'phone if they think it's one but you tell them it's the other.
