After net book or tablet for my new (on my own) work.
Any suggestions please folks? mainly for emails when out and about but would also be useful to run CAD on it too if that's at all possible.

I'd say it depends on how much typing you do.
If you do a lot then netbook, if not then a tablet should be fine.Not sure about CAD. I would have thought it would be difficult without a mouse to be honest but I'm no expert there.

have a look at Ultrabooks.
tablets are OK for "consuming" media however if you want to produce anything, look elsewhere

When you say CAD, do you mean google sketch or a real CAD package?

Don't even bother trying. Netbooks are good for a bit of Internet surfing, and emails, but not a lot beyond. Open your Internet browser, and get a few tabs going simultaneously, the netbook will start to fall over... Let alone running a bloody CAD package!!!
Way too many one man band businesses fail cos they invest in poor technology or equipment to do the job, or don't plan for future upgrades. If you're reliant on technology (which you will be for running CAD software by the sounds of things), don't skimp, buy a decent spec machine now and plan to upgrade it in 2-3 years time. Saving a few hundred quid now by buying cheap technology is false economy.

depends entirely on the CAD software you want to run. Some older basic 2D packages will run fine, but screen resolution will be limited.
Thinking 3D CAD... forget it. My Core2Duo, 64bit, 4GB RAM, 756Mb Qauadro graphics-carded laptop struggles with Solidworks these days.......

If it's basic CAD, then something Netbook form factor but more powerful might do the job (like the Lenovo X100e I'm typing on - now outdated, but there is a newer version). You're looking for something called an ultraportable, or a thin and light laptop. I have no idea about CAD, but this has enough power to develop SW, play oldish games, run multiple apps and even to run multiple VMs for network testing.
