So I’ve not been the easiest person to live with for the past six months or so and feel I’ve given my girlfriend a tough time.

Where can I take her for a nice weekend away?

    York, Bath, Durham. Or centerparcs.

Check she like Centreparcs first, it’s not for everyone 😉

    Barcelona. Bruges. Milan?

Or Blackpool if that’s too flash. You can always take her up the Golden Mile.

    Birmingham.

Or more sensibly, Rome or Barcelona.

I’ve heard a trip up the OXO Tower can be a pleasant experience.

Doesn’t this depend on what she likes in a weekend away? We need more info!

Precisely this. Is she a ‘city break’ type person? Or would she prefer a weekend at the seaside? There’s a fairly big difference. 😉

Does she like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain?
If she’s not into yoga, if you have half-a-brain
If she likes making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape
Then she’s the love that you’ve looked for, pack a bag and escape

    What does she enjoy?

Brussels has a lot of nice restaurants if you want to take her somewhere Michelin starred. Paris is nice for doing romantic stuff. Berlin is good for nightlife.

Maybe consider Scandinavia oo. I’ve heard nice (but expensive) things about Stockholm.

If it’s not your usual thing could I perhaps recommend a smallish music festival.. something at the decadent and exotic end of the spectrum rather than the teenaged lager louts and chart music type scenario

    Take plenty of rum

Just look on the Ryanair website and see what they’ve got on offer.

Gdansk is lovely at this time of year!

Take her to Warrington, she’ll realise that you have actually treated her like a princess recently….

Unless its changed significantly in the last 10 years, imagine Sunderland…

Really? It actually looks quite beautiful in the photos… a medieval centre with that crane-scale thing.

Or is that all there is, and it’s all industrial beyond that?

If you are not too far from Hull (stick with me…) get yourself booked on a weekend ferry trip to Bruges or Ghent.

Actually, it does look rather good. I thought it was just a shipyard!

Tallin is a more or less complete mediaeval walled city. Outside the walls it’s a lot of Stalinist tower blocks, but you don’t need to go there!

Vienna is pretty nice if you’ve already done Paris, Barca, Rome etc.

Jesus, Rome must be very expensive if Paris is the cheap option!

Has anyone said Center Parcs yet?

Florence at this time of year is a great shout, nice low end of winter sun gives the place a lovely atmosphere, early morning haze over the Duomo – fantastic – and no queues like there are in summer.

We went in February last time, hotel we wanted to stay in told us they were closed for spring decorating, but had an apartment we could have. It was an old converted bell tower, shuttered windows on all 4 sides and stunning views across the terracotta topped city. Was a s cheap as chips as well.

Personally avoid Paris – expensive and dull Love Rome but can be expensive

Lisbon – slightly insane, cheap, vibrant and lots of free things to do.

London – can be as cheap or as expensive as you make and generally good these days

Edinburgh – great atmosphere and again as cheap or as expensive as you want.

I think a demonstration that you’re going to be nicer to live with is a bit more important than being a long way from home (and maybe finding that you’re still a bit of a handful).

So, you’ve been horrible to her and now have set the standard for poor behaviour your’re expecting her to delight in your company for an extended period?

Send her away by herself for an all expenses paid for treat weekend in a hotel containing masseurs and nail polishers, and spend the weekend re-inventing the experience she’ll return home to.

Florence or Afan are the front runners.

Another vote for Florence, especially out of season, take a bus up to Fiesole for the views of the city and a nice meal (very good restaurant on the the steep path up to the monestary) if you have the time a day trip to Sienna.
Less queuing, it would be my version of hell in peak season but with less tourists it’s a lovely place to spend a weekend.
