   In maintaining my sash and case windows I've come across a problem...where there's a single window the secondary glazing frame is mounted tightly to the bead, and is a few mm narrower than the window I need to pull in to do the maintenance.

   I can't see any way round this other than to remove the frame, which I expect would be a PITA. It sits so close to the sash there's only a couple of inches between it and the glass, so (1) hacksawing a sliver off doesn't seem viable (the sash only rises 8" or so) and (2) I can't get at the sash to chisel/shave a few mm off it to clear it.

   Any thoughts?

   Can't quite picture the problem, so can't offer anything useful, but if you're renovating sashes, wonder if you've seen these guys who make seals and upgrades for old sashes.

   Isn't the aluminum frame of the 2ndary glazing a complete frame held in by not that many screws?

   The glazed units of the 2ndary units can usaully be lifted straight out, wothout having to undo anything, by lifting them up and then tilting out, leaving you just the aluminum frame to remove.

   * or so screw certainly easier than chisselinng the sash window unit, and certainly easier than filing/ hacksawing the 2ndary unit frame...

   Yes - but I think I'd have to take the covering panel (to the LHS of the alu secondary glazing frame in the pic) off to remove the frame, which looks like a PITA, I am looking for an easier way.

   EDIT...and I don't want to be doing this every time I wash the windows!

   Yeah, got it now. Sorry, I can't see an easy option either. Would have been handy if the secondary had been 5mm bigger all round. The left hand trim is probably only glued or double sided tape on, so should be easy enough to pop off and refit.

   Looking at your pic if there is definetly not enough leeway to wriggle/angle the sash out then I think your only option is to remove the secondary glazing frame.
   Is the Secondary frame Alu? would it be possible to tweak/bend the edge slightly to let the sash clear it.

   Ta - I don't think I could squeeze it out without damaging the frame, but I may give it a go.
