... is there any research available that backs (sorry about the pun) up their use over other types of mattresses?

Memory Foam Mattresses and Back Pain...

Can't point you at any research, but my own experience is that I don't find memory foam to be the wonder-bed material that so many claim.
I get too hot, very quickly, and I just don't get on with the "squidgy-ness" of it.
Much prefer a fairly firm conventionally-sprung mattress for a good night's sleep.
All based on a sample of 1, mind!

I can only offer the anecdotal...
Im 6'4", so my back can be a bit susceptible. Since getting a memory foam mattress 6 years ago, Ive slept like a dead thing. Much to Mrs Stoner's annoyance when one of the little ones is kicking off. Tautness in my mid back has gone, and shoulder spasms are a thing of the past.

I found it helped having a memory foam 'topper' but I think what was more critical was getting a slightly softer mattress under it that allowed my hips/shoulders to sink in more and so get a straighter spine.
N.B. I sleep on side/front not on my back. I assume it's the latter who need firm mattresses.

My experience is I've gone from being a visitor to my chiropractor every 2 months, to once a year (if at all) now we're on memory foam.
I wake up feeling 'in line' rather than twisted and generally fecked...it worked for me.
Just watch out for the lack of 'bounce' when enjoying quality time with the missus, you get used to it, but first time is a bit weird

I do enjoy the memory foam for comfort and ease of back pain, but do tend to sweat a lot?
After what fadda said about being hot? Is that what memory foam mattresses are responsible for HEAT?
If it is I may change back to sprung? Anyone else think memory foam mattresses are hot/make you sweat??

When "damping" doesnt mean what it ought to eh?

Aye the lack of bounce makes it harder work. Saves the knees though. I have a memory foam mattress, was just wondering if there is any research to support its use.

I did worry about the warmth after reading up on them, but I've not noticed it TBH, except we maybe have the window open overnight for longer at the end of the summer...

I have Tempur mattress and love it. Helps my back.

Don't expect it to 'fix' your back but don't make it any worse.
If you're getting one for back pain check out Back in Action - you don't have to pay the VAT if it's for medical purposes.
