TAKING drugs to relieve pain in labour can be shown to work better than alternatives such as massage

    Can be shown to …

Sounds like they’re saying “they can be shown to, but actually they don’t”

Peter Brocklehurst, professor of women’s health and director of the Institute for Women’s Health at University College London, added: “This ‘review of reviews’ clearly shows that many methods of pain relief in labour, particularly non-drug methods such as massage and immersion in water, are not well researched.

“This does not mean that these methods don’t work – just that we don’t know because the research has not been done.”

so, painkillers kill pain, but using drugs has more side effects than not using drugs.

sorry, should i have included “shocker” in there somewhere?

I guess that depends on whether or not you include being in excruciating flesh ripping eyeball popping pain as a side effect of not taking painkillers.

…then you have the ‘midwife’ factor. Not all are created equal.

Diamorphine (heroin) is available during delivery in the NHS. Hard to see a back massage competing with the big H for pain relief.

    I concur with the findings

Entonox does indeed work better during labour

I wonder how much account this ‘review of reviews’ took of men having opinions about childbirth? 🙂

The only pain relief my wife used was a TENS machine, which she thought worked very well. We’ve no way of know whether it was the placebo effect, but that didn’t seem to matter very much at the time.

    THIS
I dont need much research to see whether actual medicine works better than the placebo affect.
