Got my gas fire removed a while back and converted fire for log use. Tried it out for the first time last night and got a knock on the door from the neighbour saying her upstairs was full of smoke. Checked and ours was too.
Anyone know what I can do to fix it? What's involved?
Oh sheeeit! You didn't check the flue before installing the stove? People die from CO poisoning from badly-installed stoves and houses get burned down by leaking flues! The house is probably quite old, right? The flue needs a liner, which will cost £75 - £100 a metre I expect, as we paid £50 in 2001. On top of that the installer's charge will be roughly the same again. If there's space around the liner they will fill with insulating material, which is volcanic ash I believe. The benefit will be that you will survive to enjoy your stove, your house will be toasty warm and well ventilated and the flue itself will draw like a good 'un once it's warmed up.
I paid something like £25/metre for the chimney liner in my last place (2 years ago)
It wad a mid size (7") double walled stainless steel flue liner, and it was bought online from a place called Flue Supplies.
Don't know about installation costs as I did mine myself with the help of a friend who is a roofer/builder.
It's an open fire rather than a wood burner. We're getting one after Xmas which will have a liner.
The house is 1850 built so quite old.

You've done the smoke test now, anyhow... 
It's probably not worth doing owt until you get your burner sorted....
That's what I'm thinking too, really wanted an open fire at Xmas. 
Just do what they did in medieval times; slab of stone in the middle of the lounge floor, light fire, open all windows, no worries about chimneys.

you can get 316 stainless flue liner for £21/m if you look around. it has to be continuous and installed correctly according to Building regs (part j IIRC) you can either pay for installation by a self-certifying installer or do it yourself to the above standard and get Building control to come and sign it off (you have to notify them before you install)
