looking to put 80mm forks on a 93 kona lava dome approx 455mm axle to crown, anybody done this - what does it feel like?

No, but I put 125mm forks on my (80mm adjusted) '97 Lava Dome and it was fine.

It'll be just about ok in my opinion. I'm running an 80mm Judy on a '91 Avalanche. It feels a little "bargey" (steers like a barge!) , but you do get used to it pretty quickly. A shorter than original stem will help to sharpen up the handling a bit.
