had a trip to the ed royal to discuss my MRI scan that showed no problems .so the next plan is key hole surgery, after speaking to the consultant he thinks that i my have to have a part of the knee bone resurfaced but wont know until he gets in and has a look .

has anybody had this done before? or similar

I have had bother with my right knee for over 8 months , went through all the painkiller/anti=inflamatory pills/gels and finally got reffered to hospital , X-rays showed nothing and eventually got an MRI scan thay "didn't show anything so there is nothing we can do surgically to remedy the situation".
Luckily I have a personal health insurance plan through work so asked the quack to refer me to BUPA , 10 days later I had keyhole surgery to remove torn cartiledge and flush out the crap in my knee. This was less than 2 weeks ago and the difference is amazing , I still have some pain but different , if you get my drift , I can now walk for a reasonable distance , 6 miles , before I start limping. Advised 6 weeks off the bike though as twisting the knee will do damage.
This has cost me £100 excess and two weeks wages but I think it was worth it.

Some cartilage was torn away from the outside of my right knee earlier this year, and I had an arthroscopy (key hole surgery) on it. Though they didn't need to resurface any bone, they did in effect chip some holes in the thigh bone (microfracture) to get blood to pool which should form scar tissue to 50% replace the cartilage.

My knee was swollen for quite a while afterwards, and I did have a knee brace to wear for a bit plus crutches too, but if it leads to an 100% recovery, it's all worth it, right? I'd rather be back on the bike fully fit than rush a return from surgery and mess it up…. Good luck!

Yup I had key hole surgery in 2000 and it was very simple. I tore ligaments in my knee playing rugby (although they didn't know it at the time) they thought it was badly spraind! Have to say Colchester hospital were awful! managed to get onto emergency list and as the key hole surgery came before the MRI scan! THey had a look and realised that it was ligament damage and not cartilege so nowt they could do. But the surgery itself is easy, in and out in a day as they do so many. I didn't have many problems at all … but they they didn't actually do any work as my knee was too bug*ered!! Never bothered having the reconstructive surgery and to be fair I rarely get problems as quads and hamstrings kept strong only problems when super cold (like today!).

GOdd luck I'm sure you'll be fine and quickly back onto your bike!!

I also had key hole surgery on my knee as I had torn the meniscus last year. During the operation the surgeon also took some cartilage from behind my patella while he was in there. I had the op as an outpatient and even though I had some problems with blood pooling in the knee which required drainage twice I was back on my bike after about two weeks but only on the turbo with zero resistance to get the knee moving again. I also had some physio (recommended) which got my knee working as it was before again and the physiotherapist told me she has had some patients who were able to go back to work a day after the operation with no complications/pain what so ever. Since the op I have had no problems. Hope that helps.

ok all i can say is be careful.i hurt my knee arseing about on a bmx, whilst pissed, over ten years ago.i had no idea id damadged it as i was a tenager and when your a teenager you indestructable..right? any how it is now only just right ten years later.i ignored the problems for years but i basically damaged or tore the cartilage early on.i ignore it and bits broke off and then jambed into other bits and did more damage over the years.i eventually had a keyhole op, which i really had to fight for.they removed four pices of cartiage, each the size of half a pea.might not sound that big but the thing is cartilage doesnt really regenerate.ever.
i was so much better after wards but it has played up since and i nearly ended up having the op again, but the specialish did loads of x rays and said it wouldnt help.this was the point where i suggested that i wanted to go from commuting 4 miles a day to getting into mountain biking, all be it slowly and steadily.both the specialist and my gp said they did not recommend it as it would put strain on my knee and make matters worse.I went against there judgement, bought a full sus bike and started riding increasingly long distances.8miles, 10,12 16,20,22. then i joinded my local club and each week i go out for a 25-35 mile night ride, sometimes twice in a week. and the thing is the exercise has transformed my knee.the muscle defeniton etc is so much better it support the joint and i hardly ever get grief from it.but i built it all up slowly.
in anut shell, fight for the best treatment you can get and never presume your ok.once serious damage is done its very hard to recover.

Out of curiosity, who's your consultant? Mr Keenan there bolted my hip back together and then did all the assessments on my knee, he's a total knob but seems to be a fantastic surgeon… (he walked into one of my post-op assessments, said "Mr Cunningham, your elbow will be fine" then almost walked out before I could say "Yeah, I know, but it's my hip you were working on." He stops for a second then says "Really? Well in that case, your hip will be fine" and ****ed off. Good department in general in my experience, they rolled the dice a bit over the decision not to operate on my knee but it was the right call and I thank them…

I have had a sore right knee after training for and participating in a 10k run in October.
It's not too sore but feels stiff when I run and sometimes get pain from half way down my shin through the knee to half way up my thigh. If I kneel on the floor for any length of time it feels like there is no power in that knee to get up and is quite stiff.

I am still trying to determine whether cycling is aggravating it or not as I got some new winter road shoes at around the same time which I use for commuting every day. I've only cycled twice this week and it's not too sore, but I also havnt been running gor weeks. I use the floating shimano cleats with sidi road shoes (which are a tad narrow to be honest). I also got professionally fitted for new running shoes (after the 10k) and the guy in the shop did seem to think I did have misaligned hips and perhaps this was causing the problem.

Been meaning to get it checked out but will probably leave it until after Xmas.
