I have a niggly knee problem, after doing my regular trailquest event on Sunday, I came home and was kneeling on the floor, stood up and had trouble straightening my leg and it was bloody sore, until the knee felt like it popped back into position and then it was fine. Since then its just been doing it all the time, think I may hve dislocated it and its just popping in and out, but surley I would be in more pain if that was the case? Is there a different possibility?

    Go to the Dr's.
    Do not pass Go.
    Do not collect £200.

Possible answer: you've stretched the ligaments on the outside of the knee and it's that movement of bending fully bent & then straightening full that's making it look like it's popping in and out of a joint. I had something similar with both sides of the knee.

Solution: don't kneel down – for 7 years!

At a guess its a loose fragment of cartilidge or some debris in there, when you kneeled down the joint was open and it slid into the joint, then pinged back a out again later…

Go see the doc, they can remove the bit with an arthroscopy operation (keyhole surgery) its pretty common.

I had one done last year, was on the bike again before the stitches fell out.. Think I only had 2 weeks off the bike.

Nice! Yeah I am in with the doctors tomorrow morn, just that I have a 12hr enduro on April 10th so need to make sure I will be fine for that and its nothing more serious.

tinsy, yeah I have had cartilidge problems in the past and the idea of an arthroscopy was banded about, nothing ever happened though.

After that op though, I am I right in thinking it takes a while to heal, or is that if you have reconstruction done?

Ligaments take lots of time, if its just a foreign body and they dont have to poke about too much, you should be riding again really quickly, I think I was riding at 2 weeks & i did a local XC race at 3 weeks.

Its possible to get the foreign body with just normal wear and tear, you would have had a crash and damaged it to have hurt the ligaments & trust me, if you have ligament problems enough for reconstruction you would know all about it right now. But that said they will do all of those checks on you while your out to see if you have any ligament probs.

"would have had a crash and damaged it to have hurt the ligaments & trust me"

    Incorrect.
I never crashed, they became stretched for unknown reasons, partly lost in time and I did not kneel for 7yrs as I did not like the "dislocating" effect on the knee.

I also had cartilage removed and an arthroscopy and a lateral release on a quad, all at different times.

Now I'm side-lined as I've overdone it and there's inflamation under the knee cap. Fun, eh!

So basically with what has been said, does it look like any solution will only be for the short term and that this will be a problem that will no doubt get worse over time?

Ti29'r, yours does sound like a very specific injury to you, and for that I am sorry.. Would you say your type of injury was the norm though?

tjr666, only your doctor and referal to an othopedic specialist will tell you for sure, however its likely your GP will try various other methods before you get refered.

Don't know! Would hate to think of myself as normal!

    I know what you mean!!

I got so much built up damage in my knees now I have area with no cartilidge left and am bone to bone, and ostio athritis, was getting injections last year of some kind of grease, that helped, but needs re doing every 6 months and means 3 trips to hospital for the course of 3 injections.. I am 43 I suppose, cycling makes them feel so much better than resting though..
