The fabulous MrsBoblo gave me a Kindle for my birthday today. She is a star 🙂

Any tips, tricks, hints, suggestions for new drivers please?

I would be interested in this thread! I’ve played with mine and it’s relatively easy to navigate. I got int about 3 weeks ago but not used it yet as was in the middle of some 800 mammotttthh book, can’t wait to finish reading that so I can use my Kindle!

Yes, I always start with the destructions… before taking it apart 🙂

I was more after what people had found as a result of use, good sources for material etc.

    Thanks anyway.

Ummm.. Amazon are quite open about all it can do and stick a lot of stuff on it for free. So no secrets to suggest really 🙂

Not a tip really but check out some of the free books you can get on Amazon. If they are your thing, then Sherlock Holmes and Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island have both been really good reads, both for £0.00.

There are also lots of other places you can get ebooks from other than Amazon, but getting from Amazon does mean you get to use Amazon’s delivery mechanism (1-Click ordering and Whispernet), which is extremely convenient.

If you do choose to get content from elsewhere, many people recommend Calibre as an application that you can use to manage your ebooks. I believe it is free.

I found it useful for checking plane times when last in Uk (lost without my iphone!).
The internet works on it, but at dial up speed.

The internet works very quickly for me. At least, data transfer is quick. The thing takes a while to render all the junk you get on websites these days.

Anybody know anything about lending libraries rather than buying and any ‘my best Kindle read’ recomendations please?

When you’ve finished reading for the day, fold the corner of it over so you don’t lose your place in he book

Ooh you lucky fellow, you! Kindles are ace. Hope you find some of the following useful…

    Shortcuts:
    http://blog.diannegorman.net/2010/09/kindle-3-keyboard-shortcuts-et-al/#files

Loads of free classic books in Kindle format here:
    http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

Not actually tried this yet, but looks to be quite useful:

As mentioned above, Calibre is very handy for converting files in order to read them on a Kindle. It mostly works, but sometimes books come out the other end with odd formatting. Still good though:

Get rid of some of the more disturbing screensaver images and add your own:
    http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Screen_Saver_Hack_for_all_2.x_and_3.x_Kindles

    e.g.

    Inspired by this.

And while on the subject of xkcd:
    http://blog.xkcd.com/2009/04/13/the-pursuit-of-laziness/
    Brilliant.

    I made a slightly less-refined version:

My final tip is to definitely not take your usual late-night shortcut over that high wall with your Kindle in a thigh pocket unless you wish to prove to yourself that Amazon’s Kindle warranty and back-up are as good as everyone says.

    Enjoy your new toy!

(p.s. Can anyone see the above photos? I’m posting them from Picasa for the first time using a somewhat untidy process so I’m keen to know if they exist anywhere other than my (already-cleared-but-I’m-paranoid) cache. Cheers!)
