I had 32-18 on my 29er. Walked a few hills but not too many. It also meant that I wasn't dropped quite as much on the slight downhills.
Depends on your legs though!

32:16 for me last year. I think I'd have run lower if I'd had the choice - maybe 32:18. It's always a compromise, innit.

33:20 on a 29er

depended on the gradient of the hills TBH.
It ranged anywhere from 32:30 to 46:11, though i mainly ran 46:16, 18, 20, or 23 on the flats, and a 32:26. 23, 20 or 18 on the climbs. Occasionally i ran a 32:30 or 28 if it got bad and on the fast descents i used a 46:11, 13 or 16 though went to a 46:20 for the tech descents
Hope this helps

If it's any help when I do the red stuff I do it with 32:18, some of the hills are steep but most are long so you'll need to be able to sit down occasionally without your knees exploding. Personally, I'm doing on a light full suss with 27 gears but if I was forced to I think I would go for 32:18.

I'm thinking of doing the 2011 Kielder on a rigid 29er.
Funnily enough there is a pic of a chap doing just this here...

1/ You reckon 32:20 would be the best compromise? I'm running a 32:18 in the Peak at the moment but my singlespeeding has just started so I end up walking a bit. I wanted the Kielder as something to aim for in 2011.
2/ Would a rigid just be totally stupid for this kind of event. I've doe some 12 hour solo's (26'er) and some team 24 hour events in the past. Before I eat all those sweets. When I was able to cycle up hills and stuff.

was gonna do 52:12 but since my accident, training isn't going to plan so i might use 32:20
and i need to fix my forks otherwise it will be rigid too (although i have a while to fix em!
