Whats the blue stuff called that you can dab on bolts etc so that they don't come loose as easily? Do B&Q etc. sell it?

loctite is one brand - you can buy it in Halfords or any motor factors or car parts shop
Make sure you get the right grade - you want threadlock IIRC

yes the blue stuff is for preapplication, it is applied my the manufacturer and says put until you assemble, the stuff you get in car accersory shops is liquid and will say liquid until you assemble would you should do quite soon after application before it runs away..

Blue loctite is ok to use on threads down to about m4/m5 any threads smaller than that should use the lower strength loctite or risk ripping the threads out when trying to remove the bolt.

often it is better to use threadlock or retainer under the head of the bolt rather than the threads, enough to hold, but less chance of shearing the head off than if used on the threads

nail varnish also does the trick
( so thats hairspray, talc, and nail varnish in the tool box.

I use loctite 222 for pretty much everything on the bike that needs thread lock. Strong enough to keep everything in play but can be released with hand tools. Be careful, some locking compounds are forever!
