Can/should I use a spare G-pulley wheel in place of a worn out lower tension pulley? This is on an XT derailleur, the only difference I can make out is the bush instead of bearing. Can't see why not, but worth asking.

I think there is side to side float in the G pulley to aid gear alignment.
It should work fine as a replacement.
You can stick almost anything in a mech for a tension pulley as all it does it tensions the chain so your plan will be fine.
Slight hijack- my XTR pulley wheels are looking like ninja stars. Seem to work fine though. I will replace in the spring but prices seem a tad high! for what you get. Any recommendations for aftermarket replacements?
As long as it fits, you can use just about anything as a lower jockey. Did about 12 miles on this, would have ridden it again the next day but i had spare jockeys in the car.
Met a guy this weekend in to replace his chainset after cycling 10,000km from Tierra Del Fuego to Peru.
Jockey wheels were completely round.
+1 for the Tacx stainless (4060)
[not to be confused with the non-stainless jobbies: 4050]
