  • Is this an MOT failure?

The Mrs peugeot 206 rear wiper motor has siezed solid. This is annoying as the car is going shortly.
Will this be the cause of an upcoming MOT failure?

possibly. The general rule is, if it’s fitted it’s got to work.

Not in my experience. I will find out a definite answer in a second…

Get the spanners out & remove it,& put a rubber grommet in the hole.
If it aint there,it can’t get a fail!

    As above.

Having a rear wiper isn’t a legal neccesity.
If it is there, it needs to be working to be legal.

Take it off, bung the hole. Legal.

Or take it off for the MOT…..then put it back!

I take cars for MOT’s every week of the year, the rear wiper motor is not a testable item.

from hereQ: My rear wiper is not working properly. If I remove it will my car fail it’s MOT?
A: A rear wiper is not part of the MOT test. If you remove it completely ensure that the mechanism is not protruding so as to cause injury to any person coming into contact with it.

Wiper info on the MOT test only applies to the Windscreen wiper, not the rear wiper. My annecdotal evidence would agree with this (the previous owner hadn’t noticed the rear wiper gearbox was seized solid with years worth of rust and decay – took me ages to clean up). There seems to be a misconception that anything on as standard must work – this is only true of a select few things. Reverse lights being one IIRC lol.

Hmmm, can’t even get the arm off, as it’s siezed to the shaft!
If its not a testable item, i’ll just leave it.

nope reverse lights aren’t part of the mot either.

ITs amazing how little is actually tested 😉

😀 sorry, I meant reverse lights being one of the ones that are only failure if they are on but dont work, if they arent attached they’re not tested. But it seems they’re simply not tested at all – mental!

Tester here – As said, not a testable item :o)

The “if its fitted it must be working” thing mostly only applies to construction and use regulations.

Well my old Focus didn’t fail on that for several years. Granted it had to have a whole load of other things done to pass, but that fact that the rear wiper wasn’t working was irrelevant.

The rear wiper on my Passat works but makes an incredible screaming noise. I have to warn the passengers before I use it. Comical 🙂

Friend took her car for mot. Failed due to tester not being able to test middle rear seat belt due to no anchor point.

Anchor point was under rear seat after they had been tilted to get bike in 👿 Seems the guy ran out of time now that everything is timed by computer.

Somebody snapped my rear wiper off and it still passed an mot.

That’s just a lazy tester, nothing more.

The computer timing is supposed to slow them down to test more thoroughly and prevent rushing through too many tests in one day.

Definately – you will fail the MOT with worn window wiper rubber – never mind buggered motors

Again – the rear wiper is not tested as part of the MOT.
