Someone I know is writing a book and saving all his manuscript to ‘cloud'(?) anyway he says its all lost/gone.

Is it saveable and is that possible?!

Or it could be just a 21st century equvilent to “the dog ate my homework” 🙂

Its possible yes. Its only saved on a server (albeit possibly several distributed ones)

    a) Sorry, but what a dingbat.
    b) Impossible, Apple products never, ever break.

Neither of those two points probably help. Does he not have a local copy, a backup copy? If I was writing something like that I’d be taking backups left right and centre.

Forgive my ignorance, but is it even possible to write a book on a device without a physical keyboard ?

That is my worry about the move towards cloud computing. I know it makes sense in so many ways but I still would like to have the program on my machine and data on a drive in my house as opposed to some big server farm somewhere that could end up getting compromised.

    🙄
I’d suggest he leaves the pad alone and heads for the nearest genius shop

    Doesn’t look good:

Personally I’d be trying to call Apple’s support line.

I am slightly sceptical after all. Wouldn’t you leave a temporary file on the ipad itself?

Agree with Scaredypants – put it in the hands of someone who’s an expert and also an Apple employee.

Yup, especially if you use the Dragon dictate app. Amazing.

Wait, wouldn’t the primary copy be stored locally then synced to the remote storage, like with dropbox or any other “cloud” application?

Not if its not configured to do so.

IME The safest/easiest/cheapest way is to email the document to yourself every day – well, normally it is, but I guess that would be in the ‘cloud’ too in this case…

*do not do anyhting your/him/her self*

Switch the thing off and take it to the nearest Apple store.

This gives the best chances of recovering lost data.

You can ferk about with it for a bit and make the situation worse first, of course, if you like.
